Construction of an Incredible Underground Hotel in Songjiang Begins

A couple years ago, a British engineering firm Atkins proposed an extravagant design for a five-star hotel located deep within a 100-meter, abandoned and half flooded pit near the base of Tianmashan Mountain in the Songjiang District of Shanghai. Construction on the 19-story, 380-room Shimao Intercontinental Hotel finally is already underway. GoldieBlox: The Engineering Toy for Girls

Boys have long had Legos, K’NEX, and Erector sets to help them learn how to build. Until last month, however, girls had no toys marketed specifically for them to encourage nascent engineering skills such as spatial reasoning. Debbie Sterling, who received an engineering degree in Product Design from Stanford in 2005, wants to change the way young girls think about engineering. She herself had thought negatively of engineering until she was a senior in high school. By introducing concepts of problem solving, logic, and spatial reasoning into a toy geared specifically for girls, Sterling hopes to encourage young girls to […]

Self-Charging Electric Skateboard

Boosted Boards surpassed their Kickstarter fundraising goal and created the latest generation electric vehicle – what they call the “lightest electric vehicle that has ever been made.” One of the major motivations behind the project is the fact that most of our travel happens within close distance, arround a few miles. Boosted Boards provides a low cost, eco-friendly method to get people to their destination. Shipping in September 2013 is Boosted’s 2000W motor-powered longboard. It has a top speed of 20mph while cruising around town and can climb succesfully inclines of up to 15%. The Lithium ion battery is fully […]

Kjeragbolten Boulder

The Kjeragbolten boulder is a huge rock wedged more than 1000 meters up between two cliff faces. The boulder is situated in the Kjerag mountain, in Norway. Rumours say that the rock got stuck there sometime during the last ice age. Today, it’s one of the most popular places to get your picture taken. Even though the boulder hangs more than a kilometer above the water below, and there’s no hand rail or safety net, people walk (in some cases, crawl) out onto the rock for a photo shoot. Evidently the rock’s surface is flat enough that walking out onto […]

World’s Fastest Aircraft

We talk about NASA project called X-43, which is unmanned experimental hypersonic aircraft with multiple planned scale variations meant to test various aspects of hypersonic flight. It was part of Hyper-X program and has set several airspeed records for jet-propelled aircraft. The X-43 is the fastest aircraft on record at over 6,500 mph (10,461 Km/H). A winged booster rocket with the X-43 placed on top, called a “stack”, is launched from a larger carrier plane. After the booster rocket (a modified first stage of the Pegasus rocket) brings the stack to the targeted speed and altitude, it is discarded, and […]
