Soon, you could be browsing the internet at speeds of over 200 GBPS, with LiFi, the revolutionary WiFi replacement.
WiFi is essential the transmittance and receiving a signal. Currently, WiFi is generated through a radio signal operating in the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. However, there is only so much data that can be stored within one signal, therefore requiring larger transmitters to send more signals and larger receivers to interpret them. Naturally, routers are often constrained by their size in an effort to keep the devices small and more concealed. Currently, the most efficient WiFi systems can approach speeds of up to 40Gbps, yet that requires expensive devices which are still in the prototype phase.
Imagine, however, using light to surf the internet at speeds of 240 GBPS. The system is largely dependent on the recent advancements in LED technology, enabling data to be transmitted at incredibly high speeds. The current is slightly altered, thus altering the brightness for a brief moment which is interpreted by a photoreceptor. The change is so fast and repetitive, it is imperceptible to the human eye, making communication as seamless as radio frequency technology.

Other Radio frequency communication devices rely on radio circuits, antennas, and complex receivers. LiFi however, relies on much simpler technology by using direct modulation methods similar to the communication method used within the remote systems of RC units. Of course, the system will be constrained to areas that are illuminated with LiFi. Since light is not able to penetrate walls or doors, the network will only be able to have access by those within the range of the light source, thus giving added security for data transmissions.
Other added befits includes use near complex machinery that can be interrupted by RF signals, therefore, only light may be used. LiFi is the safe alternative to electromagnetic interference in hazardous environments such as mines and petrochemical plants. Similarly, since no electromagnetic interference is created, LiFi may be used near sensitive machinery, as well as is not disturbed around strong magnetic devices such as MRI scanners.
The system is currently beyond the prototyping phase and is currently available to consumers. However, the systems have not yet been optimized to exceed the 200 Gbps threshold, only achieving speeds of 1 Gbps in real world applications . Nonetheless, as the technology further emerges, perhaps someday soon all will be able to browse the internet with seamless, uninterrupted streaming to meet all your viewing pleasures, whether that includes indulging yourself in more knowledge, or taking the pleasure of looking at cat videos in 30k HD.
