Lake Titicaca is located in the Andes on the border between Peru and Bolivia, and is composed of two smaller pools - Lago Grande, a large pool with a maximum depth of 284 m and Lago Pequeno (also called Winaymarka) with a maximum depth of 40 m . The two pools are connected by Strait of Tiquina. There are five main sources that feed the lake (rivers of Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancane and Suachez), plus about 20 smaller streams and rivers.

What is remarkable in the lake are the artificial reed islands of the Uros tribe, sailing on the water surface and can be moved, making them easier to protect in case of attack. For this purpose, many of the islands, which are 44 in number, have watchtowers, built predominantly also of cane.

Uros tribe is dated before the Incas and inhabit the lake and in present days. According to their legends, their people existed even before the sun, when the earth was dark and cold. They were something like super-humans, resistant to lightnings and it was impossible to be drowned. But because they violated the established order of the universe by mixing with humans they have lost that status and became mortal and contemptible. They scattered, losing their identity, language and customs. They became the Uro-Aymaras who now speak the language of Aymar.
