The electronic giant Apple’s $5 billion “spaceship” campus in Cupertino is all set to open for business the coming year. Located on the former Hewlett Packard (HP) campus, the 175-acre area is under construction for an exquisite office including a research and development building comprising approximately 2.8 million square feet, a 1000 seat corporate auditorium, a corporate fitness center, a central plant along with an associated parking and many more state-of-art facilities for employees of this prestigious company.
Here comes our Christmas present to all Apple lovers. Watch the new video compilation of Apple’s “spaceship” campus 2 progress in construction, over the last six months. All credits to the usual Apple surveying drone videographer, Matthew Roberts, who has been following the progress for over a year.
Captivated with Norman Foster’s ring-shaped design for the future tech pivot, since March of this year, Roberts began observing the campus from the air by joining a small Bay Area subculture of drone operators.
You can compare the past half a year progress of the campus in about four minutes in the video below. The video shows a detailed aerial view of Apple campus’s progress in recent months including Auditorium, Primary Access Tunnel, Mountain of Dirt, Research and Development Facility, The Atrium, Tantau Avenue phase 2, Main Parking Garage, Fitness Center, and Maintenance facility.
Moreover, from the drone video we observe that, while some structures like the R&D building and the parking garage are nearing their finish, other aspects like Phase 2, landscaping and the primary access tunnel still have a long way to go.

Here are a few details about the Campus:
The construction of the building started in 2011 and the architect behind this exclusive building is Norman Foster. According to Foster, the building heavily features curved glass, over 4 miles, in the design. In addition, the design was inspired partly by the idea of a London Square.

The 120,000 square feet auditorium will be situated underground that can seat 1,000 people and the entrance area is covered with 80-ton carbon fiber roof. This enables Apple to host more of its events on campus. In addition, the auditorium will also feature a lobby and catering facility.
“What it allows us to do is take the product launches and special events that we do in San Francisco and beyond and bring it home to Cupertino,” Dan Whisenhunt, Apple’s Senior Director of Real Estate & Facilities, said during a Cupertino City Council presentation in 2013.
Moreover, the Corporate Auditorium will possess 350 parking spaces in the North Tantau Parking Structure.
To reduce the visual impact on the surrounding landscape, Apple will install access roads which disappear into tunnels, thus giving access to underground car parking. Moreover, the network of tunnels connects different buildings on the campus.
Mountain of Dirt:
The dirt excavated to construct the Apple’s new campus, will not be removed. Instead, the piled up dirt will be used in building’s landscaping, which will resemble a natural forest.
There will be approximately 10,980 parking spaces. Of these, approximately 9,240 parking spaces will serve the main site of Apple Campus 2. Both parking locations will be equipped with electric vehicle charging stations with about 300 charging stations. Underground parking garages will help keep vehicles from ruining the landscape.
With over 100 acres of landscaped green space, the design of meadows and woodlands will create an ecologically rich oak savanna reminiscent of the early Santa Clara Valley. Once finished, the campus will host 80% of greenery comprising of 7000 trees. Many of the plants that were selected can adapt to climatic changes. In addition to the oak trees, there will also be a number of fruit trees across the campus which will be served in the campus cafeteria.
Being a 100% renewable energy campus, the building will run on 700,000 square feet of solar panels along with fuel cells with directed biogas. Approximately 8MW of photovoltaics will be installed in the Main Building and parking structure roofs.
Considering the climatic conditions of California, the main building will go without air conditioning or heating for 75% of the year through a natural ventilation system. According to a report from the San Jose Mercury News, more than 157,000 gallons of water will flow to Apple’s campus daily, which might be used for landscaping, cooling towers, and plumbing.
Towards the northwest of the main building, a 100,000 square foot fitness center will serve more than 20,000 Apple employees. In Dec 2014, Apple acquired permits to construct a $74 million on the fitness center, according to Buildzoom.
In order to help employees around the campus, almost 1,000 bikes will be provided.
The walls will be possessed with the world’s biggest pieces of curved glass of more than 3,000 sheets.
According to Business Insider, neither the signature ring-shaped building nor the site of the campus was part of the plan in the beginning. “It didn’t start as a circular building, it really grew into that,” said Foster to Architectural Record in 2014. “So the idea of one building with a great park was really born out of a very intensive process, with many models and many presentations,” Foster said.
On the ground level of the main building, there will be a 60,000 square feet movable seating dining facility that can accommodate 2,100 people. In addition, there will also be a 20,000 square feet of mezzanine space that can accommodate an additional 600 people and 1,750 seats on terraces for outdoor dining.
Within the common zones of the building, meeting and breakout spaces will be dedicated with approximately 83,000 square feet of space.
Phase 2 includes 600,000 square feet of office, research and development buildings for up to 2,200 employees. Located along North Tantau Avenue, these buildings provide flexibility to address future business needs.
Behind its smooth curving walls, the gleaming spaceship assures to follow a composed environment, reflecting Apple’s brand values of ”innovation, ease of use and beauty.”
