Which Marvel characters were engineers?

So, without further ado, here are 7 Marvel characters who are also engineers in the universe. Trust us when we say this list is far from exhaustive and is in no particular order.

1. Dr. Doom is a pretty badass engineer

Dr. Doom, or Victor von Doom, is one Marvel character who also happens to be an engineer in the universe. This deeply troubled, and frankly misunderstood character, is one of Marvel's most interesting supervillains.

He is the sovereign ruler of Latveria, and is supposed to be one of the most technologically skilled characters in Marvel.

According to Marvel lore, he was born in a Romani camp outside Haasenstadt, Latveria, and after a very troubled childhood (to say the least), he finally attended the State University in Hegeman, New York.

He became obsessed with avenging his mother's death during his childhood and reclaiming her soul from the grips of Mephisto. Dr. Doom became permanently scarred after his invention, and an astral projection device exploded, causing him to be expelled from University and travel the world plotting his revenge against the world.

2. Spiderman is pretty handy with gadgets

Spiderman, or Peter Parker to give him his real name, is another Marvel character engineer. Although most of his strength comes from a chance radioactive spider bite, he designed and built all of his gear.

He is one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe and is not a force to be reckoned with. Parker is supposed to have genius-level intellect and is a proficient scientist and inventor.

According to lore, he was orphaned at a young age and raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City. His later attendance as a teenager at a public exhibition demonstrating the safe handling of nuclear waste materials would change his life forever.

3. Dr. Octopus is another awesome Marvel engineer

Dr. Octopus, aka Otto Octavius, is yet another kickass Marvel engineer character. Born into a lower-class family in Schenectady, New York, he would go on to become one of the universe's most feared supervillains.

He is another character who received a very questionable childhood that would shape his future as a genius inventor and engineer. Dr. Octupus is usually depicted as a stocky, myopic man whose most distinguishing feature is his set of powerful, mechanical appendages.

His biggest arch-enemy is the aforementioned Spiderman, and the two can often be found duking it out.

4. Iron Man is probably the best known Marvel engineer

No list of this kind would be complete without including Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. Since his "powers" are effectively of his own design and making, you could probably argue he is one of the most accomplished Marvel engineers around.

Tony Stark, a very wealthy business magnate and ingenious scientist and engineer, received a very serious chest injury during a botched kidnapping. In desperate attempts to save his own life, he found a way to build a mechanical suit of armor virtually out of scraps.

After later refinements, this suit becomes ever more powerful, enabling him to reap justice on the criminals and villains of the Marvel Universe.

5. Hank Pym is another pretty accomplished inventor and engineer

Hank Pym is yet another highly accomplished engineer in the Marvel universe. After discovering a new kind of particle (Pym Particles), he discovers that he can use them to manipulate the size of things, including himself!

He was the original incarnation of Ant-Man before Scott Lang took the name later on in Marvel lore.

One of his greatest inventions, Ultron, later rebels and becomes the arch-nemesis of the Avengers. Ultron is widely considered being one of the coolest baddies in any fictional franchise (at least in our opinion).

6. Hank McCoy is another inventive Marvel character

Hank McCoy, also known as "The Beast," is yet another Marvel character who is a pretty accomplished engineer.

McCoy was originally born in Dunfee, Illinois, and his father worked at a nuclear plant. During an accident, he receives a massive dose of radiation that alters his very DNA.

As a result, his son Hank is born with some very interesting mutations. McCoy is one of the more unusual mutants in the Marvel Universe because he shows signs of his mutations at birth -- namely oversized hands and feet and incredible strength and agility.

Later in life, he tries to cure himself of his mutant abilities using some of Mystique's DNA.

Unfortunately, things didn't go to plan, and he was left blue and furry. He is meant to be one of the most gifted Marvel characters in the Universe.

An expert in mechanical engineering, quantum physics, theoretical physics, he can design and build pretty much anything he puts his mind too.

7. Forge is yet another Marvel engineer character

Forge is another Marvel character who also happens to be a pretty tasty engineer. Born as a Cheyenne Indian, he spent his early years developing his mystic powers under the tutelage of the tribe's shaman, Naze.

His tutor also happened to be a mutant with a flair for inventing mechanical devices. This rubbed off on Forge, who would go on to be a highly accomplished inventor and engineer in his own right.

During a stint in the Vietnam War, Forge used his powers to help win a battle and was badly injured. Using his ingenuity for invention, he developed his own prosthetics to replace his lost hand and leg.

Post-war, he decided to give up his psychic powers and focus on his engineering abilities instead.

8. Shuri is a pretty badass engineer too

Shuri, the Princess of Wakanda, is the sister of Black Panther. She also happens to be a pretty badass engineer too.

Heiress to the throne, she is the youngest child of T'Chaka and the only daughter and biological child of Queen Ramonda.

From her youngest days, she dreamed of becoming the Black Panther. Against the advice of her mother, she broke into the arena to challenge her uncle S'yan for the title.

She was pipped to the post by her brother, who subsequently won the title.

Shuri has genius-level intelligence and is well versed in her understanding of Wakandan science and technology. She is also a master inventor and engineer who regularly dreams up and creates amazing new tech.

9. Reed Richards might just be the very best Marvel engineer

And finally, when it comes to Marvel characters and their engineering-prowess, Reed Richards might just pip the post. Widely considered the smartest man on Planet Earth, he also has the odd ability to stretch his body — a lot.

Richards is a theoretician, physicist, and inventor who has, supposedly, mastered every form of science. He also happens to have mastered mechanical, aerospace, and electrical engineering.

Not too shabby.

According to lore, he has invented items that allow space travel, interdimensional travel, and time travel. He has also invented robots, supercomputers, synthetic polymers, holography, to name but a few.
