Apple was the subject of some criticism during the Golden Globe Awards, adding to the blow of not winning any awards for its "The Morning Show," which had received three nominations.
During the live event which was broadcast on NBC and covered by the media, comedian, and host Ricky Gervais called out Apple in how it operates its business, using the nominations for "The Morning Show" as his entry.
Cook takes the roasting in stride
“Apple rolled into the TV game with a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China,” said Gervais as the camera zoomed in on Tim Cook, who was in the audience. Gervais, who called the show "superb" went on to make a dig at the actors that work for these streaming services and ended it with this zinger: “Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you?”
Gervais also called on celebs to refrain from political statements
Gervais was an equal opportunity insulter, taking his ire to the celebrities in attendance. During his monologue, Gervais urged actors to use their time to say thank you but not make a political statement.
“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech,” Gervais said. “You’re not in a position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and f--- off.”
