Ares Design Has 'Dropped the Top' on Tesla Model S, Two-Door Convertible

Ares Design altered nearly every aspect of the Tesla Model S body to engineer a two-door model.

The Italian coachbuilder Ares Design just debuted its most impressive rebody job to date: a jaw-dropping two-door Tesla Model S convertible, according to the company's official website.

Ares Design 'drops top' on Tesla Model S

This comes on the heels of Ares' last time in the sun — when it showed the world what it can do to a classic Porsche 922 Turbo. Now the Modena-based firm has created a singular drop-top Tesla for the sophisticated consumer.

Craftsmen had to cut the original roof away — along with the B-pillars of the Model S. They threw away the rear doors and crafted new front doors to compliment the new design. The trunk lid was also changed to house the folding roof — which was also customized.

The Aero team also added a carbon fiber aero kit. But to ensure the car doesn't flex without the structural roof, the entire vehicle was stiffened with extra strengthening for both the side and bottom structure of the car.

Tesla Model S drop-top was 'pure coachbuilding project'

The rear seats are bespoke, with a totally-trimmed interior in ice-white leather with orange detailing — to suit the customer.

"Our co-create philosophy allows clients to work side by side with our designers and engineers to create their very own bespoke vehicle, a service that is unique to Ares," said Ares' Design Boss Dany Bahar, according to Hagerty. "This Tesla project is a superb example of this; it was a pure coachbuilding project which we very much enjoy doing and seeing the results of our uncompromising standards."

Future of electric vehicles lies in bespoke engineering

Of course, Ares isn't the first coachbuilder to turn its eyes to Tesla's Model S. In 2018, Dutch designer Niels Van Roij created his own bespoke Model S — a Shooting Brake for the electric vehicle and long-body enthusiast named Floris de Raadt.

One needn't be a Tesla enthusiast to grasp how the Tesla lineup lends itself naturally to customization. The electric vehicle market itself represents a cultural and economic foray into an entirely new world of sustainable transportation.

As one of the more imaginative approaches to vehicle design, luxury- and sports-car styles will have a lot of catching up to do when fossil fuel is finally obsolete. But specialists of bespoke designs like the Tesla Model S from the engineers at Ares Design will likely lead the way in shaping this high-end future.
