Chevrolet and Shell have teamed up to offer "automotive industry’s first embedded, in-dash fuel payment and savings experience". Chevrolet owners will be able to pay for their fuel without leaving their car, using a credit card or mobile device.
The payment system works via the Chevrolet Marketplace App accessed through the vehicle's touchscreen. To use the in-car service, the driver taps the Shell icon and is given a code that unlocks the fuel pump and allows the car to be topped up.
Marketplace app can pay for fuel and order food
After filling up, the payment for the fuel is deducted from the payment system previously supplied to the system. Marketplace is the world’s first vehicle service that allows the user to order food, make dinner reservations, find parking or hotels and locate and pay for fuel at participating Shell-branded stations via their cars touchscreen.
“We introduced Marketplace to deliver value, productivity and convenience to our customers,” said Rick Ruskin, senior manager, Online Commerce, Chevrolet. “Bringing the Shell Pay & Save functionality right on the touchscreen of our vehicles is the latest advancement of this platform, allowing drivers to simply access Fuel Rewards® and pay for gas while inside their car.”
In-dash system offered to GM vehicles by end of the year
The app is available in all 2017 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, but the in-dash fuel system is currently only available for Chevrolet vehicles. It will be rolled out to other General Motors Vehicles later in the year.
By the end of 2018 more than 4 million vehicles will have the in-dash fuelling option. The Marketplace app already directs drivers towards their nearest Shell station as part of a collaboration between the fuel and car company.
The in-vehicle payment system is the next step in this relationship. The service is currently in its pilot phase in Detroit, Seattle and Houston.
But a wider rollout to cover more than 14,000 Shell stations will happen before the end of the year. “Being the first to deliver this type of in-dash fuel payment and savings is very exciting,” said Sydney Kimball, vice president, Fuel Sales and Marketing Americas for Shell Oil Products U.S.

Chevrolet keen to deliver technology advantages
Chevrolet has always led the field when it comes to embracing new technologies. The U.S. carmaker introduced the myChevrolet app in 2010. The app allows car owners to seamlessly interact with their vehicle in a variety of ways, like checking vehicle diagnostics, sending navigation requests or locking the doors. The app is also available on Apple Watch.
