Although the cryptocurrencies have been around for almost a decade, it is until recent that these currencies have received tremendous appreciation from the market. Bitcoin for instance recently surpassed $5,000 and Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency surged over 21,000%, since it was first introduced. The blockchain technology and its features such as anonymity, security and immunity from the Government manipulating the prices, is what seems to be the driving force behind the astronomical rise of these cryptocurrencies.

The growth of Bitcoin and its underlying technology however inspired the development of alternate cryptocurrencies often known as altcoins. These alternative coins are growing in numbers, and at present are above 1,000, sharing more than 40% of the total market cap. What is interesting though is there are many unknown and weird digital currencies floating around that are used in most innovative and bizarre ways.
