Engineering is a highly technical, challenging and rewarding career for any bright-eyed and bushy-tailed undergraduate. Once you've graduated you can look forward to a never-ending professional life of developing, sometimes never seen before, solutions to many of the world's challenges.

You will grow in competence and confidence as time goes by and collect an interesting set of skills that will help you become unstoppable

But if that hasn't sold it to you, here are 13 reasons you really will come to love your decision to pursue a career in engineering.

Why do engineers love engineering?

The reasons that any professional loves their work are as varied as the individuals themselves. For some, it's all about the pay, for others the varied and challenging nature of the work.

For yet others, its the chance to travel the world or the feeling they get from their work. If you are an engineer yourself you're bound to have your own reasons for loving the subject.

Why would you like to be an engineer?

Much like the previous section, only you can give a real answer to that question. But for some seasoned veterans of engineering, their motivations for becoming an engineer tend to follow a certain theme.

For example:-

"I chose to be an engineer because I thought it would be a lot of fun! Engineering is the field that solves the most impactful of our problems in the world, like creating clean energy or detecting cancer. As engineers, we are constantly changing the world with inventions and solutions that affect everyone's lives." - Jenny Boothby via engineergirl.com.

"I've always been fascinated by and driven to understand, the way things work. The solar system, weather, biological processes, anything. But machines and circuits are things I could actually take apart and look inside without disrupting anything (well occasionally I'd disrupt the family's ability to watch TV or make toast.. if you know what I mean!)" - Jedidiah D. via quora.com

As for your own reasons, we'll leave that up to you to decide.

What engineering major should I choose?

The term engineering is somewhat nebulous in isolation. But which field of engineering you want to specialize in will depend on your personal abilities and interests

Some great disciplines to consider are, but not limited to: -

  • Aeronautical Engineering.
  • Mechanical Engineering.
  • Chemical Engineering.
  • Civil Engineering.
  • Computer Science Engineering.
  • Electrical Engineering.
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.
  • Aeronautical Engineering.
  • And many more...

What are some reasons people love engineering as a career?

So without further ado, here are some reasons why people love engineering as a career. This list is far from exhaustive and is in no particular order.

1. You get to change the world

Engineering is one of the few professions that can genuinely claim it changes the world. From designing and implementing things like pollution controls to life-saving equipment, it really does make a difference.

Most Popular

Engineers around the world are working on various solutions to many problems that make the world that little bit better. They design and build products that never existed before, saving people time and effort every single day.

2. It's incredibly challenging and rewarding

Engineering is, without doubt, one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, jobs in the world. It is difficult at times, but this only forces engineers to grow as individuals to overcome the myriad of problems they will face.

As an engineer, you will need to improve your skills and knowledge every single day. And not just hard skills.

3. You get to solve problems and be creative

In many ways, this is linked to points 1 and 2 but is deserving of its own entry. Engineering is a great professional for developing your creative muscle.

You will need to help design and create new systems and technologies to help solve a novel problem. But it can also apply to larger problems like getting men to Mars or providing high-speed internet to remote locations.

4. No two projects are usually completely the same

Many challenges faced by engineers will likely rarely if ever, have been solved before. Or if the basics have, the specific site conditions or client requirements will force them to be creative with developing a solution.

Metaphorically you may need to design a way of making a square peg fit in a circular hole.

5. You will always have opportunities to learn new things

Because of the diverse nature of engineering projects, you will likely find your skills are lacking in one or more areas. This will force you, as an engineer, to develop your skills in areas you might never have expected.

"As an engineer, there is always an opportunity to learn a new technique or a new application in your area of expertise. Technologies are always changing which makes room for improvements in what we do and how we do it." - rebeccaee.com

6. Engineering careers are pretty flexible

As we have already seen, engineers need to be pretty flexible in their professional knowledge and skills. Many of these skills can be applied to other industries or professions too.

This enables engineers to be able to chop and change throughout their careers until they hit on something they love.

"It can be a launching pad for jobs in business, design, medicine, law, and government. To employers or graduate schools, an engineering degree reflects a well-educated individual who has been taught ways of analyzing and solving problems that can lead to success in all kinds of fields." - engineergirl.org.

7. You get to work with a highly dedicated team

Engineers are very dedicated individuals and many projects usually require a team of such individuals to complete. For this reason, you will mix with many interesting people and may even find long-term friends.

Camaraderie is usually pretty high amongst engineering teams too.

8. Engineers often develop many interesting transferable skills

As we have already seen, by pursuing a career in engineering you will collect many useful, and interesting, skills.

"The skills you learn as an engineer can be applied in many disciplines or used as a stepping stone to another career. For example, businesses in the financial industry like to hire engineers because of their problem-solving skills and ability to process big data.

The methodical approach that engineers have for solving problems can also be a great start to crafting arguments as a lawyer. Engineers also have skills that are great for moving up the corporate ladder to leadership positions." - rebeccaee.com

9. Engineering offers the chance to travel, a lot

Working in engineering offers you, as an engineer, the chance to travel the world. Many products and services that engineers develop tend to have a global market.

This gives them a very valuable opportunity to travel the world to meet clients or help train operatives (or other engineers of course).

10. You'll rarely if ever, get bored

Because engineering is an inherently creative profession, you will rarely, if ever, find yourself getting bored.

"Creative problem solving will take you into uncharted territory, and the ideas of your colleagues will expose you to different ways of thinking. Be prepared to be fascinated and to have your talents stretched in ways you never expected." - engineergirl.org.

But, of course, there will be times you may find yourself in a rut. However, this is usually the time you'll use your skills to develop something new to keep your mind occupied.

11. Engineering is often highly paid

Engineering is one of the highest-paid professions around. While medical professionals may beat them in some sectors, engineers consistently make good money nearly everywhere they are in demand.

12. You get to make a difference

Engineers really do make a difference to the world. Everywhere you look you will see some examples of their work making a positive impact on everyone's lives.

From cars and planes becoming safer and more efficient to hardware and software solutions freeing up our daily lives for more interesting tasks, engineers earn their crust by saving people's lives, time and labor.
