7 of the Best and Most Interesting Fourth of July Celebrations from the Science and Tech Industry

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is a huge deal in the US, sparking celebrations in all states. The federal holiday commemorates the Declaration of Independence in the country, which was signed on July 4, 1776.

Typically, celebrations include incredible firework displays, entire streets in major cities are cordoned off for parades and floats. Some Americans prepare for the celebrations months in advance. 

The smell of barbecues in people's yards fill the hot summer air, American flags are not only flown on buildings but worn by people, with funky baseball caps, socks, shorts, and shoes all displaying the red, white and blue star-spangled banner. It's a day of true national patriotism. 

The science and tech world definitely didn't stand by watching obliviously. Here are some of our top picks for the best and more interesting ways that the industry celebrated the Fourth of July.

1. Astronauts Send Video Message From Space

Happy Fourth of July from the only two Americans currently not living on planet Earth!

NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Nick Hague sent a Happy Fourth of July video home from the International Space Station (ISS) yesterday. 

Harnessing their patriotism, they flew the American flag on the ISS' wall behind them and wore suits that bore the flag. 

"As we orbit our planet high above you, we want to take a moment and wish all Americans, at home and around the world, a very happy Fourth of July," said Koch in the video.

2. American Social Media companies have fun in their own ways

In a fun and bright tweet, YouTube urged its members, amateurs and professional video makers alike, to join in the fun of the Fourth of July by sending in live streams of their celebrations.

On the other hand, Twitter pulled their own funny joke on the day with their tweet saying they're unavailable, just like when you try to reach someone and they're unreachable.

3. Tweets From Tech Giants

Elon Musk: Not a direct tweet from Tesla and SpaceX's CEO and founder per se, but his re-tweet of Zack's message, is a short and sweet message simply bearing an American flag. The re-tweet is something to behold, however, as an assembly of red, blue and white Tesla cars form an American flag. Quite the sight!

Tim Cook: The head of Apple tweeted a moving and heart-warming message on Independence Day.

A few people didn't say a peep, however. Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, for example, remained silent on Twitter on the big day. Too busy celebrating with family, perhaps?

4. Incredible Apple and Amazon Discounts 

As Americans were celebrating the holiday, many were also shopping on some incredible discounts offered by Apple and Amazon, including other tech companies. 

On Amazon, Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro from 2018 went down as much as $250. The discounts included both Wi-Fi and cellular models. 

Amazon are continuing the sales on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro models for the rest of the week -- offering the lowest prices the iPads have ever been sold at. 

The Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 4 smart watches were also going for sale up to $80 lower than normal prices. 

Apple's Echo dot went down by $25 as well. The list continues on these fantastic deals. 

5. Science Experiments Created Just For the Fourth of July

Jason Lindsey, also known as Mr. Science, shared fun science experiments specifically tweaked for the Fourth of July celebrations. 

From confetti poppies to bubbling festive red, white and blue volcanoes. Mr. Science demonstrated how to create science experiments in a truly fun way. 

6. Kids Science Experiments 

A way to get the children involved in fun Fourth of July festivities is to get their hands dirty and creating fun science experiments.

7. Google's Doodle

Barbecues and baseball, two of America's favorite pastimes. Especially on the Fourth of July.
