Audi has just revealed concept images of its new "Sportback" version of the Q4 E-Tron electric SUV that was debuted in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new model is a slightly smaller, more affordable version of the Q4 E-Tron. The Q4s will go on sale in 2021 and will start at approximately $45,000.

'Identical twins'

The Q4 Sportback version, much like the regular Q4, will be powered by parent company Volkswagen's modular "MEB" (modular electric drive matrix) platform. This sets them apart from the original E-Tron which is powered by an electric drivetrain developed in-house by Audi.

Both versions are "identical twins" from a technical point of view, Audi has said in a press release, though the cars give consumers slight variations so that they can choose a personalized option that best suits their needs.

As such, the Q4 Sportback will sport a twin-motor setup with 225kW of power (roughly 300 horsepower), an 82kWh battery with about 450 kilometers (about 279 miles) of range.

A stylish exterior

The real differentiator for the Q4 Sportback is its stylish exterior. The Sportback's rear spoiler and race car-inspired diffuser live up to the car's name.

The Q4 Sportback will be slightly more aerodynamically efficient, though there will be slightly less passenger and cargo space in the interior of the electric vehicle.

The Q4 Sportback is a real showcase of the way Audi and other carmakers are making a big push into the electric vehicle market.

Cruising into the electric space

In their press release, the carmaker stated that "by 2025, Audi will offer more than 20 automobiles with all-electric drive in the most important markets worldwide and achieve roughly 40 percent of its sales with electrified models."

As an impressive demonstration of this focus on going electric, the seven Audi EVs coming out next year are only a fraction of the full selection of electric cars and vehicles the Volkswagen Group — which owns Audi, Porsche, Ducati, SEAT, Bentley, and others — has slated for release.
