Australian home inside out extension blurs the outside and inside

Andrew Maynard Architects were given a challenging task when a family in Australia wanted an extension built on to their home. The team rose up to it and designed an inside out extension which was very unusual, one which blurred the fine line between the indoors and outside.
The extension was designed in different parts with the first of it was beside the main body of the house which has room for the lounge, kitchen and a dining area. This part of the extension was given shelter by way of sliding doors that can be opened up during nice weather. The rest of the extension may be called plain weird; however, it does have a design that makes a lot of sense.
The homeowners had also asked for a music studio and storage space to be located at the far end of the garden and instead of building a separate building the architects lengthened the extension via an unclad section, creating a connection between the studio and the kitchen area. At the same time it gave the residents a space in-between that was semi-outdoor. The designers then decided to have a little fun by installing a bathtub in the space.
When talking about the unusual design of the building, Andrew Maynard Architects said: "Construction sites are fascinating and often very beautiful. When wandering the street and stumbling upon an anonymous house in construction we all get excited by the possibilities. We all imagine what the finished building could be like. The site holds so much promise when there is nothing more than a timber or steel frame. It is a jungle gym, a relic, and a skeleton full of play and imagination. Often it is when a building is at its most beautiful."
The unusual outdoor-indoor space was given the unusual name of Cut Paw Paw and it has some green credentials too. Wherever possible, the architects made use of high performance insulation, while rainwater is put to good use as it is collected in a tank and used for toilet flushing, irrigating the garden and using in the washing machine. The windows and opening of the extension were also designed with thought to optimizing passive cooling and a pond is located close to the extension to help with cooling the immediate area close by.
