We have all seen a skateboard. Four plastic wheels, a couple of solid axle trucks and a deck. A simple and effective design that has provided some of us with endless hours of fun from childhood well into adulthood.

So what happens when a few skateboard loving engineers with automotive backgrounds come together? This is what.

This is the BajaBoard, created by a team of engineers out of Melbourne, Australia. It is a four wheel drive all-terrain electric skateboard  with a top speed of 50km/h. In order to create something that is not only fast but also stable, the BajaBoard team ditched the
traditional skateboard truck design and opted instead for independent double wishbone suspension more often seen in open wheel race cars.

To cater for the bumps that the BajaBoard will inevitably encounter, the team adapted proven mountain bike shock absorption technology. As it turned out, these shock absorbers fit the BajaBoard perfectly. It also means that the BajaBoard is designed to handle jumps like a mountain bike, pending rider skills.

The BajaBoard is powered by four 3kW brushless motors (one motor per wheel), giving the board a combined motor rating of 12kW. This may seem a little high, but the team explains:
The reason we use these motors is not for top speed as some people may think; we use them for their torque characteristics. We want the BajaBoard to launch like a car, and go up hills that other electric skateboards can only dream of. To date, we have been able to achieve 0 to 30km/h runs in under a second, and have easily powered up hills over 30% grade incline.”

The BajaBoard also features a comprehensive control system, which allows the rider to adjust top speed, maximum throttle, and, even set up electronic differential for better traction during corners.

Some of the other features available in BajaBoard's patent pending design include:

  • Adjustable ride height & stiffness (through calibrating the shock absorbers)
  • Adjustable steering rate (front and rear wheels)
  • Dual throttle controller (able to convert from four wheel drive to rear wheel drive)
  • Regenerative braking
  • Over 30km range, with replaceable lithium battery pack

With everything included, the BajaBoard comes in at just under 20kg, and can be transported in the back of a car or on a roof rack.

BajaBoard is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to try and raise funds to complete the final design and start production.
