BMW has unveiled a new electric scooter design concept that evolves its Motorrad division by integrating an angular, spacious design aesthetic with innovative rider gear centered on connectivity.

"With its electric drive, trailblazing design, and innovative connectivity solutions," the Motorrad Definition CE 04 "sets out to redefine the scooter segment," BMW says in a press release.

In typical concept fashion, the iconic car company hasn't released any specs or potential release dates showing whether this electric scooter idea might become a reality.

The Motorrad Definition CE 04's industrial aesthetic

"A scooter is not a ‘fun bike’ which is taken for ride in the mountains in fine weather, but a practical everyday vehicle for driving from home to the office or meeting friends in the evening - simply a vehicle for every day in the city," Alexander Buckan, who heads BMW’s Motorrad division, explained in the company's statement.

With that in mind, the new Motorrad Definition CE 04 has an industrial style that makes it look like it could be commissioned by law enforcement or the military.

The electric scooter's elongated, low body and its diagonally rising front end are emphasized by sharply defined edges for a modern urban feel.

The flat battery in the Motorrad Definition CE 04's underbody allows extra space for storage, allowing riders to store their helmets and other equipment under the seat.

'A moving screen'

"While the BMW Motorrad Concept Link in 2017 still seemed like a vision far from the future, the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 in 2020 transfers the radical design of the Concept Link to production readiness with almost unchanged design," BMW explained.

BMW's new concept isn't just about the motorcycle itself. The company developed specially-designed rider gear that is integrated with a proprietary app and a screen panel at the front of their scooter concept.

Features of the riding gear include customizable light guides in the sleeves and hood that ensure greater visibility in road traffic. To ensure that the rider's app-enabled smartphone is always charged up, the inside pocket of the gear has an inductive charging field.

"We see the CE 04 Definition almost as a moving screen with which a customer can express his personality - from modern elegant to urban," Gerald Höller, graphic designer at BMW Motorrad Design said.
