Fuel Pump Issues Prompt Toyota to Recall Close to 700,000 Vehicles

Toyota announced it is recalling more than 700,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. due to an issue with the vehicles' fuel pump. 

In a press release, the vehicle manufacturer said the cars are equipped with a fuel pump that could stop working.

Recall covers several brands 

"This can result in a vehicle stall, and the vehicle may be unable to be restarted. If a vehicle stall occurs while driving at higher speeds, this could increase the risk of a crash," said Toyota in the press release. It noted that if the fuel pump stopped working warning lights and messages may appear on the instrument panel. Another telltale sign: the engine could "run rough." 

Toyota said its currently investigating the issue and will develop a fix, which it will apply to all the impacted vehicles at no cost to the owners. It plans to notify vehicle owners by mid-March. The recall involves several 2018-2019 brands including Lexus, 4Runner, Camry, Land Cruiser and others. Toyota said the recall involved about 696,000 vehicles. 

Toyota is no stranger to recalls

This isn't the largest recall the vehicle manufacturer has undergone in recent years. In the fall of 2018, Toyota recalled more than one million cars due to the potential for them to catch on fire.

The recall involved its Prius, Prius plug-in hybrid and C-HR SUV models. In that instance, there was an electrical problem that if left unchecked could have prompted a fire. About 500,000 of the recalled vehicles were in the U.S. while 200,000 were in Japan.

In 2016 Toyota had to recall 1.7 million Prius vehicles because of issues with the airbags and parking brakes.
