Giant R2-D2 Structure is an Overhauled German Observatory

There are Star Wars fans and then there are super Star Wars fans.
Professor Hubert Zitt at the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany clearly lands in the latter camp. Last year he and a small team he enlisted including Horst Helle, his father-in-law, Klaus Ruffing, the German painter and student volunteers overhauled the Zweibrücken Observatory into a huge version of R2-D2, the beloved droid from the smash-hit movies.

The professor behind the R2-D2 observatory known for his Star Wars lectures
According to media reports, Zitt is a big Star Wars fan and is known for his Star Wars and Star Trek lectures. In what must have elicited joy for Zitt, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill mentioned the observatory on Twitter.

Observatory already looked R2-D2 shaped
Transforming the observatory took painting genius but it wasn't too labor-intensive given the dome-shaped observatory already looked a bit like R2-D2 at least the shape of the droid.
With a fresh coat of painting and a replica of R2-D2 in its correct size out front, the observatory was reopened.
Germans aren't the only ones
The Germans aren't the only ones to show their love of Star Wars through a fixed building or structure. Back in December of 2017 a California resident Colby Powell erected a lighted replica of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars on his roof. He first put it up for Halloween but then made it part of the holiday lights adorning his home. His replica of the Millennium Falcon measured 8.7 meters long.
Back in 2010, Goodsell Observatory did their own take on R2-D2 but it doesn't compare to the German's work.
