After three days of court hearings, leading Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou was released from jail in Canada on a $10 million bail. Many legal experts suggested she could be in for a long legal battle about extradition to the United States.

The CFO of Huawei was arrested on December 1 after being accused of helping her company dodge sanctions on Iran.

As a result of her release, the 46-year-old executive has to surrender her passport and live in one of her Vancouver homes. She will also live with a GPS ankle bracelet and have around-the-clock security that she must pay for.

Meng’s attorney requested she should be released on bail due to health complications.

Meng posted on her private WeChat that she’s back in Vancouver, according to reports from Chinese media.

“I’m in Vancouver, back with my family. I’m proud of Huawei, and I’m proud of my motherland! Thank you for your concern,” Meng said according to reports

Huawei is one of the largest tech companies in the world. It’s China’s highest performing tech company, and it sells more smartphones than Apple.

Growing tensions between the US and China

The United States has 60 days from the date of the arrest to file a formal extradition request with Canadian officials. The Canadian Justice Department has another 30 days to look at the request and decide whether or not to begin the extradition process.

In an interview with the press, US President Donald Trump said he would do “whatever’s good for this country” in terms of acting with regard to Meng’s status.

"If I think it's good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made — which is a very important thing — what's good for national security — I would certainly intervene if I thought it was necessary," Trump told Reuters in an interview published shortly after Meng was granted bail by a judge in Vancouver.

The United States and China experienced growing tensions over the last year regarding trade disputes and disagreements.
