Learn How to Chill Any Drink in Under 2 Minutes

Trevor English

Everyone likes to have ice cold drinks, but what do you do when all that's left is that warm can in the back of your pantry? There are a few methods you may have heard of, but there is one way to get that drink colder than ever in just under 2 minutes. The trick to cooling off any beverage really fast is not only fast mixing but exposure to super cold temperatures. One of the best ways to do this is using ice water with salt added. Adding salt to the mixture decreases the melting rate and increases the freezing rate, allowing for the water to remain colder for longer when the drink is added. Check out the video below for all of the specifics.

This trick can come in super handy for when your fridge is too full or everyone at your party already drank the ice cold cans. Adding salt to ice water is typically seen when making and mixing ice cream, but it is very useful when trying to transfer the cold thermal energy in the water to another object. Since the freezing rate is increased and the melting rate is decreased, a greater amount of thermal energy is transferred to the warmer object.

Cooling drinks this way is incredibly effective. After just 2 minutes of mixing, the temperature change was 19˚C (34˚ F) which is some serious chilling. If you are more of a bottle person, this cooling technique will work on virtually any bottle, as long as you have a bowl big enough to hold the mixture. If you don't have ice, you can also wrap your drink in a cold paper towel and place it in the freezer. Leaving it there for about 10 minutes normally gets it nice and cold.
