Musk Says Game You Play With Tesla Steering Wheel on its Way

Elon Musk says a game you can play with the steering wheel of your Tesla is coming soon. The CEO of the electric car company made the exciting statement during his appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on Thursday.

Musk is a huge fan of video games and Tesla owners can already enjoy a swathe of games including classic rejigged classic Atari titles.

During his appearance at the conference Musk showed a short video of a person playing indie game Cuphead on the Tesla’s tablet with a controller. He then presented another clip of someone playing the 2018 mobile racing game Beach Buggy Racing 2, using the cars steering wheel to control the game's character. “I mean, if you have a racing game and you have a steering wheel...it’s sitting right there, waiting to be steered,” Musk said after the footage ran.

Tesla screen screams for games

Musk didn’t say exactly when the game will become available but as the list of games grows so do rumors that Musk will launch a Tesla app store that could host games developed by third parties. Tesla's massive center console screen is ripe for a range of games and applications. Musk has been asked about the platform before but says the Tesla fleet needs to grow before the idea is sustainable.

“In order for it to be worthwhile for somebody to write an app, there has to be enough of an install base to warrant the effort. Even if you are going to port something, it’s still got to be worth the effort. As our number of vehicles grows, it starts to potentially make more sense to develop games and other applications for Tesla. We just need a lot of cars,” he said during a recent podcast appearance.

Games developed grows with fleet

There are roughly 500,000 Tesla vehicles on the road globally and the electric carmaker has plans to increase production so that about half a million new cars are produced annually. Musk also mentioned the need for a ‘consistent platform’ which likely refers to the fact that Tesla’s most popular car, the Model 3 has a landscape display while Model S and Model X have a vertical display.

Tesla said that future iterations of the Model S and X will have a landscape center display like the Model 3. Musk hinted that until the hardware is more similar and all of them run Linux on Intel chips, no serious moves will be made towards the platform.
