Ohio BMV Rejected These 330 Personalized License Plates in 2017

In an increasingly digitized world marked by mass production, for many Americans personalized license plates—also known as vanity plates—are still one of the last ways available to everyone to express one’s uniqueness and individuality. 

Local governments in each state, however, do reserve the right to place a limit on how far drivers are allowed to go with plate messages. Among the list of achievements, accomplishments, and firsts for 2017, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the license plates that were judged too odd, too offensive, or too questionable to make the final cut: at last count, there was a total of 330 rejected individualized license plates.

For the record, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles spells out 3 clear guidelines (and we must admit, they are in fact very detailed, leaving little to be misunderstood) about what content it considers unacceptable:

• Words, combinations, and/or phrases (in any language and when read either frontward or backward) that are so profane (that is, swearwords or expletives) obscene, sexually explicit or scatological.

• Words, combinations, and/or phrases that are so offensive that they could reasonably be expected to provoke a violent response from viewers without additional comment.

• Words, combinations, and/or phrases that advocate immediate lawlessness or advocate lawless activities.

As one would imagine, some tricksters try original letter combinations that when spoken aloud produce the same effect as the original offensive word. A look at the list reveals a fairly innocuous list of phrases—some voicing dissent against President Trump, while others are comical nonsequiturs— although the Ohio BMV most likely is so strict about the rules in order to avoid a Pandora’s Box scenario.

The Business Behind Customized Plates

On the flip side of the personalized license plate issue is the very lucrative custom license plate industry. Private collectors throughout the world put down money for them as a way to raise the value, or level of interest, of their car. UK-based motoring journalist Quentin Wilson explains in stark terms the difference between the two:

"The number plate market is polarised between the cheesiest, chosen by people with the literary sensibilities of vampire bats, and those that look really quite good, hide the age of your car and can look really quite classic. It really is about being visually pleasing. They are great fun but much abused. It seems to have caught the nation's psyche. For a motoring-obsessed nation they are a suburban trinket. A number plate is a form of automotive jewellery. You can either change your car or change your number plate, and changing your number plate is cheaper."

In the end, whether one is using plates to spruce up an otherwise dull car, or using them to make a bold and celebratory statement about surviving cancer, plates are an iconic symbol that is sure to live on as long as the automobile.
