Pornhub Wants to Buy Tumblr to Bring Back NSFW Content

Tumblr is back on the market with its recent interest in buying PornHub. The Wall Street Journal reported that less than two years after acquiring the blogging platform Tumblr, Verizon wants to offload the site.

Soon after getting their hands on the site Verizon, who bought Tumblr as part of a bigger deal that included the acquisition of Yahoo, banned all adult content causing an uproar on the internet.

PornHub quickly expressed interest in the site telling Ars Technica that it would reinstate adult content if they can seal the deal.

"There are obvious synergies between the two brands and value Pornhub could derive from Tumblr," Pornhub VP Corey Price said in a statement to Ars.

"We’re extremely interested in acquiring the platform and are very much looking forward to one day restoring it to its former glory with NSFW content.”

Tumblr long-time safe haven 

Tumblr had long been a place where artists, content makers and is chiefs could share content dubbed ‘not safe for work (NSFW). Tumblr has a pop cultural legacy for many, particularly with the LGBTQI community.

Many users turned to the blogging and social media site to meet like-minded people and to find relevant content in an increasingly controlled digital world.

Verizon banned what it called ‘adult content’ soon after acquiring the site, but the algorithms it used to filter had some serious bugs.

Many media outlets reported that non-adult content was being flagged and vice versa.

The ban includes photos, videos, and GIFs of human genitalia, female-presenting nipples(let’s not get started!), and any type of media that depicted sexual acts, including illustrations. nude classical statues and political protests that feature nudity are except and so is text so erotic stories are ok.

Illustrations that depict nudity are ok, but any hint of sexual activity and the ban will be imposed.

At the time of the ban, PornHub tweeted that its site would welcome content creators to upload freely. PornHub allows mature content makers to upload work for public viewing.

PornHub spreads it wings

If PornHub does manage to acquire Tumblr it could mark a shift for the company away from being a straight-up porn serving site to something more nuanced.

Though it isn’t the company's first foray into being a more ‘regular’ content providing platform. Back in 2016, Rapper Mykki Blanco chose PornHub as the site to premiere his new song ‘Loner.’

The sale of Tumblr doesn’t come as a big surprise. Yahoo bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013, but quickly revalued the site at half that value. Verizon bought Yahoo's operating business, including Tumblr, for $4.48 billion in June 2017. It is unclear how much Verizon is asking for the site.

The WSJ reported that Verizon's sale process for Tumblr "is ongoing and may not result in any transaction," and that "[i]t is unclear how much Verizon might get for Tumblr."
