Rubik’s Cube Movie in the Works After Major Chess Success
Thanks to the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit", classic games are seeing a renewed interest, and now, a new feature film based on the Rubik's cube is in the works to get the big-screen treatment, Variety reports.
Prolific action movie producer Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Endeavor Content have teamed up to produce a feature film based on the colorful 1980s favorite and bestseller.
'Creating a wonderful and complex Rubik's universe'
While the details haven't been made public, it is reported that the film will be produced by Amritraj and executive produced by Priya Amritraj and Addison Mehr for Hyde Park. It does not yet have a public release date.
"I’ve had a personal and nostalgic connection to the Rubik’s Cube from my early days in India," Amritraj said. "I am thrilled to partner with Endeavor Content and Rubik’s/Smiley and look forward to creating a wonderful and complex Rubik’s universe."
There is also a game show in the works based on the Rubik's Cube. Hype Park is working with Endeavor Content-backed "The Wall" producer Glassman Media to make it happen.
Graham Taylor, co-president of Endeavor Content, stated: "The Rubik’s Cube is an iconic and family-friendly brand. In partnership with Hyde Park, we look forward to creating film, television, and game show content for global audiences."
This will mark the first time the Rubik's Cube, which is one of the most recognizable toys with 450 million of them sold all around the world, will be the center of a feature film.
Invented by Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor Erno Rubik in 1974, the cube, which had professional players facing off at competitions to solve the puzzle, might become the next hit following the success of chess.
