Samsung Unpacked Event Debuts Galaxy Note 20, Note20 Ultra, and More

Samsung debuted several new devices — including the Galaxy Note 20 — in a mega-event Wednesday morning live-streamed on the company's YouTube channel.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 20, Note20 Ultra

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra runs at 6.9 inches, slightly less than the best Android tablet ever — the Nexus 7, which featured a 7-inch screen, reports The Verge. The Note 20 has a 6.7-inch display, and both new devices run at a 120 Hz refresh rate.

During the debut, Samsung claimed they have "the fastest processors in the Galaxy series" — which is actually true. It uses the Snapdragon 865 Plus, instead of the 865. However, the Note and the S-line have been neck-to-neck in performance for the last few years.

Additionally, the new devices can charge to 50% in 30 minutes on the Note 20, according to Samsung's Mary Kay Lee.

UPDATE August 5, 11:41 PM EDT: Samsung Galaxy Note camera specs, night mode, colors

The front camera offers a 10-megapixel selfie, including a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 108-megapixel wide-angle feature, and several 12-megapixel telephoto cameras on the rear of the device.

While Samsung suspects "mystic bronze" will be a popular color for buyers, a previous video preview of the Note 20 aptly described the Note 20 as big and on-brand, but with only modest improvements on the S line.

The Note 20 Ultra features etched glass and a satin finish, and the Note 20 is built with reinforced polycarbonate.

After a Netflix marketing video, the company debuted the new S pen — a defining aspect of the Note, more than size or specs.

The company then spent a lot of time discussing the "mystic bronze" color — even saying "it's gender fluid." Anyway, the S Pen probably works well with the new device.

UPDATE August 5, 12:20 PM EDT: S Pen latency issues, 9ms

Samsung says it's taken care of latency issues from the Note series in developing the Galaxy Note 20.

The 120 Hz display has improved this feature, with the device now at a latency of 9 ms, reports The Verge.

The company used AI to predict where users will draw, to reduce latency periods. Google did the same with Google Keep, and it works. Since stylus strokes tend to move in a finite number of directions, the S Pen is a wise application for machine learning.

UPDATE August 5, 12:30 PM EDT: New Galaxy Tab S7

Surprisingly, the new Samsung Tab S7 resembles the iPad Pro.

Of the Tab S7, the company said it was the "ultimate productivity device." The new device includes a little stripe on its back, which signals where users may put the S Pen.

The Tab S7 features a 120 Hz display, and the larger S7 Plus model will ship out with an AMOLED display. This is pretty cool. The company also said the S7 Plus is the "slimmest tablet of its size on the market."

Of course, the Tab S7 also comes in mystic bronze.

Users of the Tab S7 can run up to three apps at the same time. Additionally, the device features ad-free access to YouTube Premium, which means Google's irritating pop-ups won't jump out asking users to pay money every time they open YouTube.

UPDATE August 5, 1:00 PM EDT: Tab S7 Specs

The new Tab S7 features a kickstand, a removable keyboard, and a stylus. With these features, it feels somewhere between an iPad and a Surface. The device features DeX, to provide a desktop-like interface.

The device, via Android, will also have Clip Studio Paint — which will work well with the S Pen. The notes app works via cloud to sync with other Galaxy devices.

Samsung's Notes app will include translation, recording audio and syncing with notes, highlighting, and other functions.

UPDATE August 4, 1:10 PM EDT: Samsung partners with Microsoft

Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to offer Windows 10 so users may run Android apps within Windows. Notably, the Tab S7 will function as a second screen for Windows PCs "later this year," according to the live stream.

The partnership with Microsoft will also bring Xbox, to offer Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

UPDATE August 5, 1:20 PM EDT: Galaxy Buds Live

Samsung's earbuds — called Galaxy Buds Live — look like beans and are ostensibly made of recycled materials. This is important because wireless earbuds are notoriously hard to repair.

It's interesting to note that they come in mystic bronze.

The new buds have noise cancellation, which cuts low-frequency sounds more than high-frequency ones. The company claims the new earbuds offer "up to 97%" reduction of background noise.

UPDATE August 5, 1:30 PM EDT: Galaxy Watch 3

Treated as "a personal assistant to your health and your life," Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3 aims to offer many of the health and fitness capabilities of a smartwatch.

The new Galaxy Watch 3 features a rotating dial, and comes in two sizes: 45 mm and 41 mm. It even comes in hardcore titanium. Users can take a photo of any object, and set the watchface to create watchface colors that resemble it.

Users will also be able to perform electrocardiographies, and monitor blood pressure on the Watch 3, but the ECG may not be immediately available. Notably, the Watch 3 can monitor blood oxygen levels.

The sleep tracking feature has undergone a refit, and makes use of algorithms and more exacting personal data.

UPDATE August 5, 1:45 PM EDT: Galaxy Z Fold 2

The gap between the new Galaxy Z Fold 2 is minimized, with a 6.2-inch front screen — which will let users use it like a normal smartphone.

It has a thinner body, a hole punch instead of a notch, and a smaller gap, along with a bigger outer screen. Additionally, the main foldable display is 7.6 inches, and features a 120 Hz refresh rate. The company also claims the display layers are now "optimized," with a "reinforced" structure.

Additionally, the Fold 2 can stay open at several different angles.

The glass of the Z Fold features a plastic protector to save it from minor nicks. More details on and preorders for the Z Fold 2 will see be available on September 1. While there's no stylus for the Fold as of writing, an official of Samsung implied it may be coming in the future.

UPDATE August 5, 2:00 PM EDT: Samsung offers OS updates for '3 generations'
