They don’t make them like they used to….well now Fender have released guitars made from reclaimed wood.

When you think about guitar players such as the late Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, one famous guitar name comes to mind…the Fender Stratocaster. 'They just don’t make them like they used too anymore,' is the old saying that is true when it comes to guitars made today. While they sound good, modern materials including Arium and Flaxwood just don’t offer the same sound as those made from the old vintage woods.
Now there is good news as Fender have launched Special Edition reclaimed wooden guitars, just for those who miss the distinct sounds that can only come from old timber for the construction.

Fender has got hold of a limited amount of reclaimed woods from some of the most obscure of locations in the US and have used it to make their iconic Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. They have launched the redwood model, which they have made from wood that dates back to the 1930s, while their version of guitar in pine has been made from wood that goes back as far as 1868. So now Fender are in fact making them like they used to, if only in limited editions.
The Old Growth Redwood Stratocaster from Fender has been constructed of redwood that has been taken from bridges that were built in the Great Depression. These include the Caliente Creek and Basin Creek bridges in Bakersfield California. Both of these bridges were constructed in 1933 and lasted until 2012. The body is made from one piece and has been hand rubbed with oils so as to bring out the natural beauty of the reclaimed wood. As you might expect, the guitar offers a tone that Fender described as being “warm and rich, similar to cedar.”

The Special Edition guitar is a 25.5 inch scale and the modern C shaped neck, made of maple comes with a rosewood fingerboard that features 21 medium jumbo frets, with bone nut that is synthetic. The chrome and nickel hardware has a two point synchronised tremolo system that comes with saddle of bent steel along with staggered cast and sealed tunersand the pick guard has been made from anodized aluminium. It has the humbucker/single/single pickup config along with Fender Diamondback bridge pickup and features two American Vintage 65 gray bottom singles in the neck and middle positions. The Old Growth Redwood Stratocaster is sold with a Fender hard case, along with a strap, polishing cloth and cable and it is a true work of art.

The Reclaimed Eastern Pine Telecaster and Stratocaster make use of the same tone wood that Leo Fender actually used when creating the first of his Telecasters. The wood used for the construction of the guitars was taken from a dairy barn in Lake Odessa in Michigan, which had been originally erected during the 19th century. The craftsman at Fender worked very hard to get around all of the imperfections and knots in the old wood, however they did leave them intact and just added a dark satin finish stain, by hand. Each of the guitars in the series is unique and Fender have said that the tone is “resonant and airy, with plenty of sustain and a prominent midrange; similar to ash."

The guitars come with 25.5 inch scale along with 22 fret rosewood neck and fingerboard along with the C shaped profile, a phenolic pick guard of single ply, aged hardware and black plastic knobs. The Telecaster offers the Texas Special single coil at the neck along with custom shop Broadcaster at the bridge, 4 way switch and knurled flat top knobs.

The guitars are Limited Editions with a price tag starting at $2,599.99.
