Weekend Project: DIY Micro Forge with a Propane Torch

As the weekend approaches, many of you may be looking at an empty schedule and a lot of free time. Interesting Engineering is going to bring you a new project every week so that you have something to build over the weekend. For this weekend, it's time to build yourself a miniature forge out of a propane torch and a fire brick. You should be able to get most of the parts for this build at your local hardware or appliance store. Having a forge will allow you to anneal knives, or even take up the hobby of blacksmithing. Whatever you plan on doing, check out the video below to walk you through the project step by step.

Here is what you are going to need for this project:
– 3 inch thick Firebrick
– 8" threaded rod, 36" lengths (2) You’ll cut them in half.
–8" nuts (16) These should fit the 8" rod but have a smaller outer diameter than the 2" washers.
–2" washers (16) 5"×1" aluminum angle
–24" length 5" aluminum plates
–4"×6½" (2) Cut to this size
–16d finish nails (3)
You may not have access to many of these parts, but you can improvise to find things that will work for your area. You will basically be building a metal frame for the fire brick to keep it elevated off of your working surface. When you do finish the forge, be careful, as the inside can reach temperatures of 2,300˚F. After all, the last thing you want to do is hurt yourself after building yourself a new tool.
