Elon Musk Says He Got ‘Verbal Govt Approval’ to Build An Underground Hyperloop Between NY and DC

Elon Musk just tweeted he got a verbal approval for the Boring Company to build an underground Hyperloop tunnel between 4 stations.

It is still unclear who gave this approval and how he got it. But, he gave a hint in his tweet that he got "verbal govt approval". The Four Hyperloop stations are New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. The train will transit between all the city centers, says his tweet. The Hyperloop is able to transit between New York to DC in 29 minutes as per Business Insider

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, co-founder of Tesla Motors and numerous other startups, has developed Hyperloop transportation model in 2013.

What is Hyperloop?

Hyperloop is a high-speed mode of transportation inside a tube or capsule. The new mode of transportation is conceived and headed by Elon Musk has put top engineers from SpaceX and Tesla on the design. The first proposal was made in 2012, claiming it as the “fifth mode of transportation”.

How Hyperloop works?

It may appear unrealistic, but the Hyperloop system works on the transportation system that drives the tubes in the vacuum. The train container will either use magnetic levitation technology or float using air caster "skis". The main advantage of Hyperloop system is that it works on very little friction, which enables the system to drive the train to maximum speeds of 760 mph. The tunnels for tubes for the train will take as little as 3 meters in diameter, occupying less space than the underground conventional rail system.

Hyperloop Developments

Back in 2012, Elon Musk claimed that the Hyperloop system is all weather friendly and travels at twice the speed of air travel while consuming less power. Initially, Elon Musk made an open offer to manufacture the Hyperloop idea. Accordingly, SpaceX conducted competitions to develop the technology. However, the final contenders were Hyperloop Transportation Technologies or Hyperloop One.

The first development took place in a desert in Nevada. In 2017, the Hyperloop One, who first developed the capsule started testing on a 500-meter stretch, topping a speed of 70 mph in 5.3 seconds.

Without wasting time, Elon Musk started digging or boring the tunnel at a land outside SpaceX. Interestingly, he named it as “The Boring Company” and he started boring the tunnels to test his new technology around the Los Angeles area. The venture gave a new enthusiasm to his fans and naysayers alike. Some are skeptical and others are anxious that it could help them with future transportation.

After the initial trending tweet, Elon Musk followed up with a series of tweets to his fans revealing more information on the project approvals. His tweets confirmed the expansion plans of Hyperloop system to Los Angeles- San Fransico and Texas areas.

Since the new concept took the center stage, Elon Musk has posted several photos and videos on the progress of the project. Meanwhile, he has received many proposals from outside the US, from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Dubai to develop Hyperloop system. The final tested system, hopefully, will be ready by 2021.
