Elon Musk's Boring Company wants to find more efficient and quicker ways of digging tunnels to avoid everyone's least favorite thing in the world -- traffic.
Now, it is calling on those interested to build a tunneling machine that is better than Boring Company's current Tunnel Boring Machine is so slow that a snail is 14 times faster. Their goal, as they state in their announcement too, is to "defeat the snail in a race."
The company will organize its first "Not-a-Boring Competition" in the spring of 2021 if the idea gathers interest among businesses, engineers, students, and hobbyists.
The company's announcement read, "The Boring Company's goal is to build the tunnel infrastructure necessary to enable fast, safe, and comfortable transportation, including Loop and Hyperloop. To feasibly build a large network of tunnels, one must first rapidly innovate to increase tunneling speed and reduce tunneling costs."
And that is exactly what they are trying to do with this competition.
Design, build and race your own tunneling solution
Teams from around the world will try to design, build, and race their own tunneling solution at The Boring Company’s Dig-a-Factory. Digging a miniature tunnel faster than a snail can move might not sound so difficult; however, it is apparently harder than it sounds.
"Teams will compete to bore a 30-meter tunnel with a cross-sectional area of 0.2 square meters (equivalent to a circle with a 0.5-meter diameter)." Boring Company stated.
There'll be three winners
There will be three winners to crown in the spring on 2021, categories being fastest to complete the tunnel, fastest to complete the tunnel and a driving surface which they'll drive a Tesla remote-controlled car on, and the most accurate guidance system depending on how far away the tunnel is from its target.
The announcement didn't specify what the winners will receive; however, knowing Tesla's flashy gestures, it isn't hard to imagine something good might be in the making.
