Maruti 800 is a wildly popular car manufactured by Maruti Suzuki of India between the years 1983 and 2014. There are over 2.6 million of these sold throughout its production run, it's second only to Hindustan Ambassador (which saw a 56-year production run).
Years after its production run ended, Maruti retained its popularity for its affordability and practicality. An Indian company named Northway Motorsports is adding power into that list.
Northway is specialized in ICE to EV (internal combustion engine to electric vehicle) conversion. The stock engine in 2014 Maruti 800 is a 0.8 L straight-three gasoline engine, it measures at a modest 37 BHP (brake horsepower) and 43.5 ft-lb (59 Nm).
The car, with its stock ICE motor, can throttle up to 90 mph (144 kph) and it takes roughly 14 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 kph). To sum up: it's decent but it's not that powerful of a vehicle.
Northway Motorsports did not disclose the HP output of the converted car, or its top speed and acceleration, but they disclosed that the modified vehicle has a 278 ft-lb (378 Nm) torque.
To put that in perspective, the current United States base model of Ford F-150, a premium pickup truck that comes with a Cyclone V6 engine, outputs 264 ft-lb (359 Nm).
Folks at Northway begin this conversion by uninstalling the engine and transmission along with the interiors of the car. Then, the car is fitted with a 9 unit lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack (each unit has a 200 Ah capacity) along with a high-torque AC induction engine. With these batteries and the engine, the car has a 93 mile (150 km) range. The backseats are thrown away and the front seats are replaced with lighter, racing-type seats.
The car also sports a Raspberry Pi-powered touchscreen dashboard. As an added functionality, Raspberry Pi also has a hill-start function, which isn't included in the original vehicle. If you reside in a western country, it's likely you'll see one of these bad boys, although Northway is one of the many (relatively) inexpensive EV converters emerging in the world.
