Unless you are from the future or from a lucky part of the world that is not affected by the novel COVID-19, you might be reading this from the obligatory comfort of your home. The pandemic has forced numerous countries into closing their borders and its citizens' doors; leaving people with too much time on their hands.
Lou Stagner, a golf strategy and analytics expert for DECADE Golf, and his 9-year-old daughter, Abby, who had also too much time on their hands, built a replica of the 12th hole at the Augusta National Golf Club using a total of 20,000 LEGOs. They built the replica at their home in New Jersey, spending over 60 hours of planning and building.
This plastic masterpiece is 50 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 20 inches high, which is the size of the family's dining room table. In a message to Golfweek, Stagner wrote: “Our basement has been overtaken by Lego"
Stagner shared a time-lapse video of their project in process on his Twitter.
My daughter and I built this replica of Augusta National #12 out of Lego.— Lou Stagner (Golf Stat Pro) (@LouStagner) March 17, 2020
We are planning to sell it to raise money for charity.
And on another bright note, the family is planning on donating the LEGO Golden Bell, which is the name for Augusta’s 12th hole, to a charity that benefits the homeless.
Originally, after completing the replica, Stagner had reached out to multiple players in golf to seek a partner and auction the item. The sale was going to be launched during Masters week; however, due to the pandemic, this plan had to be shifted.
Stagner wrote, “We are still searching for a partner and unfortunately the coronavirus has somewhat put a damper on the original plan.”
It has been some time since the 2020 Masters was postponed due to the pandemic. So this one is for all golf-fans out there who are devastated about not being able to see the Augusta National in person and on television in April. We should say that this one is a fine-replacement with a lovely story.
Moreover, this not-so-little project might be what you needed to get out of that slump. If you’re anxious or bored at home today with a lot of time on your hands, this might be the cue that you’ve been waiting for.
