Tesla will soon release its new Dashcam Viewer and if this first glance at the onboard, in-action of the Viewer is anything to go by, it's convenient and simple.
The new viewer allows Tesla owners to watch recorded Sentry Mode videos caught from the car's cameras from four different angles.
First demonstrated by Tesla hacker @greentheonly on Twitter, all four cameras are simultaneously watchable in real-time from within the vehicle.
Dashcam Viewer and Sentry Mode
Tesla's integrated surveillance system, called Sentry Mode, makes use of the vehicle's Autopilot cameras to record what's going on around the car. The feature has, in fact, assisted a number of Tesla owners to catch unsuspecting vandals and thieves.
In order for Sentry Mode to function, the cars' owners have to plug in a storage device such as a USB or a thumb drive, and then activate the features in the settings.
Now, Tesla is releasing a new feature that enables the vehicles' owners to watch their Sentry Mode videos directly from within the car. They no longer need to bring their USB or thumb drive to a computer or laptop elsewhere in order to see the footage.
Tesla did a great job on the video browser for the sentry/dashcam clips. Really like the UI. You get to see all 4 recorded cams in real time and select which one is maximized. pic.twitter.com/sdzDThaodV— green (@greentheonly) April 4, 2020
The car does have to be in Park mode for the owner to view the videos, and all that's needed is to click on the camera icon available on the dash screen. By touching the icon the player will automatically start and will display a list of both the Sentry mode footage as well as the Dashcam clips.
Tesla shared the information regarding the upcoming Dashcam Viewer with its Early Access Program members on April 3rd. It will most likely be a welcome addition to the electric vehicles as Tesla owners have been requesting it for some time.
Tesla's release notes were as follows:
"Watch saved Dashcam clips or Sentry Mode events from the touchscreen with the Dashcam Viewer. To launch, tap the Dashcam icon in the status bar and select “Launch Viewer” while the vehicle is in PARK. If the vehicle is in DRIVE, you will continue to save a clip by tapping the icon.
To view saved clips and events stored on your USB drive, tap the Menu icon in the upper left corner of the viewer. Each video is organized by location, date, and thumbnail for easy access. For additional filtering options, tap the “Dashcam” or “Sentry” tabs.
Select a clip or event to play the corresponding video. To select video from a particular camera, tap the associated thumbnail marked Front, Rear, Left or Right. Play, pause, or scroll by using the video controls at the bottom of the player. To delete a video, tap the trash icon in the bottom right corner of the video player."
