GMC introduced the world to pickup Hummer EV Edition 1 "super truck" back in October of last year, scheduled to be released next fall. On Saturday, the automaker unveiled a new addition to its Hummer EV fleet with the Hummer EV SUV.
The design replaces the Edition 1's open bed with an enclosed cargo area including an externally-mounted spare tire. The five-passenger vehicle is expected to arrive alongside the 830 HP Edition 1 in early 2023, GMC explains on their website.
The all-electric Hummer SUV will deliver an estimated 428 km (300-mile) range — around 50 miles less than the pickup Edition 1. It will use a 20-module Ultium battery pack that will provide power to three motors mounted on the front and rear axles.
The Hummer SUV — which will support 800V charging at up to 300 kW — adds to the variations on the Edition 1, which include the $99,995 EV3X and the $79,995 EV2 with a 402 km (250-mile) range.
GMC's vision for the 'most compelling electric super trucks ever'
Much like the pickup version of the Hummer EV, the SUV includes 'Extract Mode', which lifts the vehicle's body by 6 inches in order to clear road and off-road obstacles.
It will also include GM's SuperCruise hands-free driving system, which allows drivers to change lanes without turning the steering wheel and a host of other hands-free maneuverability options.
Four-wheel steering and GM's CrabWalk, meanwhile, allow the vehicle to drive diagonally in order to get out of potentially sticky situations.
"The GMC Hummer EVs were envisioned to be the most capable and compelling electric super trucks ever," Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC, said in a statement.
Alongside the unveiling, GMC released a video, featuring a spacy Led Zepellin cover, that tries its hardest to make the new SUV look like the best thing since sliced bread.
All hyperbole aside, the early 2020s are shaping up to be a watershed moment for the electric truck, thanks to the Hummer unveiling as well as models by other competitors such as Tesla and Rivian.
Preorders are now open for the pickup Hummer EV as well as the new SUV variation. The Hummer EV SUV will retail for $105,595 when it goes on sale in 2023.
