That&#39;s a lot of disposable diapers in our landfills!Due to the lack of sustainable alternatives, disposable diapers have been piling up in landfills since 1965. Today landfills are bursting at the seams with an estimated 400 billion traditional plastic diapers. And each diaper takes up to 500 years to decompose.The first-ever disposable diaper may remain completely intact until the year 2465. And with the increasing population, the severity of the diaper crisis is increasing on Earth.There must be other ways to get rid of these used diapers, or we will be surrounded by mountains of used diapers, which would stink!But don&#39;t worry!This company makes diapers that can decompose quickly. The soft fibers in the diaper are obtained with pure water weaving technology and are used to create the different layers of the diaper.The first layer is the top sheet that makes contact with the baby&#39;s skin. Next is the surge layer, which is followed by the third and final layer, the absorbent core. About 100 seeds are added to the absorbent layer of each diaper. The absorbent layer is also biodegradable in nature. This means that once the baby uses the diaper, the absorbent layer can degrade, and the seeds can grow into plants, thus saving our planet from the very start. These eco-friendly diapers have been tested in the lab and showed up to 12 hours of absorption capacity. The biopolymers used in diapers are made from sugar cane which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to four times their weight!As a result, they manage to avoid emitting twenty-four million pounds (10086 t) of carbon dioxide annually. This is almost equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide released by 34,848 cars in a year!What&#39;s inside the diaper layers counts as well! All the layers are made from nature-based ingredients like natural bamboo, organic cotton, and almond milk instead of petroleum-derived raw materials.Once the diapers are ready, they are packaged into 100% recyclable natural packages. About 350 million of these eco-friendly diapers are produced per month, ready to protect the environment and our future in any way they can. And it is only a matter of time before the whole diaper industry switches to this eco-friendly option.

Lubricating oils are an integral part of any automobile these days. They keep the mechanical components in motion, limiting friction and regulating temperatures. However, motor oils need to be replaced after a certain period; if left unchecked, they can spell disaster for the vehicle and the owner. There are approximately 1.5 billion automotive vehicles worldwide. Imagine the amount of lubricating oil consumed by these vehicles and eventually the oil waste generated when they need to be replaced. This generates tons of lubricant oil waste, leading to a need for this waste oil to be handled and recycled. One such facility by the name of Tayras, based in Istanbul, Turkey, does precisely that. The oil refinery takes in waste lubricants and converts them into transparent base oil while massively cutting down on the carbon footprint of recycling waste materials.  A strong adherence to scientific methodology and strategic planning allows Tayras to achieve impressive oil recycling output.The lubricant oil is first brought from waste oil collection centers to the factory. Samples are collected from these used oil tankers and analyzed at the lab to check for the quality of the oil and the possible yield that could be obtained after recycling. Once the used oils pass from the labs, they are then taken to large-scale feeding tanks where caustic is added to the oils before they are further processed for distillation.Tayras uses a vacuum and heating process like other oil refineries to achieve high-quality oil during the distillation process; at Tayras oil refining facility, the distillation tank temperature reaches between  482 - 572°F (250-300 °C) while attaining a vacuum pressure of 0.014 - 2.9 pounds per square inch (1-200 millibars) to decompose the hydrocarbons. The resultant yields of light and heavy oils are then separated and stored in their respective storage tanks. They are further purified using the hydrotreatment technique, which allows the oils to get rid of residual sulfur, chlorine, and nitrogenous compounds that limit oil efficiency and increase impurity. The final result? Oils that are group 2+.Considering the alternatives for waste management of oil, that is, either spilling into the earth&#39;s soil or burning the used oil results in unaccountable climate contamination with the heavy metals intoxicating the earth&#39;s soil and even worse when the oils are incinerated, the heavy metals and chlorine compounds get released into the atmosphere. Recycling lubricant oil is a necessary step toward reducing our carbon footprint. This requires a collective effort, with initiatives like turning your used automotive oil into oil waste management units rather than dumping them or burning them.

This is an e-waste recycling facility. Here the dead electronic products are reincarnated and are given a second chance to live as new products. Thousands and millions of consumer electronics are produced each year, consisting of electronic PCBs, hard drives, batteries, and other electronic components. Once reaching the end of their life cycle, these electronics pile up as waste. Electronic waste comes from the different markets and municipalities to the factory. At the facility, first, the electric waste is categorized. Larger components are broken down into smaller, more manageable electronic components. A high-temperature furnace is used to melt the plastic away from gold and other metals present in the electronic part. The plastic melted during the separation process pours out at the other end as a liquid into cold water. Eventually, it’s solidified and cut into smaller pellets of plastic to be reused in manufacturing. On the other hand, the metals need to be tested for their quality before reuse. These metals are sent to labs for their quality evaluation, where a high-fidelity atomic spectrophotometer is used to analyze the purity and quality of the metals. The whole process is highly efficient, and all of the so-called waste is turned into raw materials. As explained by the plant manager at the Kocaeli Factory, 15% of the energy used to recycle copper is equivalent to 100% energy required to mine the same amount of copper. These recycled materials act as feedstock for new electronic material production; for example, cobalt extracted from lithium-ion batteries is procured by various manufacturers to be used in the production of new devices such as USB drives, flash storage, and charging connectors alongside the manufacturing of other stainless steel equipment. The plastic from this facility ends up in the production of hangers.The facility for e-waste recycling also ensures that any personal information present on any storage device is not disclosed. Like paper shredders, electronic storage devices pass through industrial crushers, reducing them to small metal and plastic remains. This way, electronic waste recycling not only ensures the safety of the planet but also of each individual’s data privacy. The metals extracted from recycling, such as cobalt, nickel, graphite, and lithium, are in great demand with the rise of electronic vehicles. These materials are generally procured from different parts of the world; thus, if these materials are not recycled, a greater burden is added to the extraction of natural resources, which are already perishing rapidly.
