You would be forgiven to believe once you are buried in the Earth, your body decomposes quickly and gives back to nature peacefully. However, the reality of that process is much slower and more harmful to Earth.When a person is buried in a country like the U.S., their body is first covered in several chemicals, placed in a wooden casket, and put underground. Given there were roughly 3.4 million deaths in the U.S. in 2021 alone and about 36.6.% of these people were buried, a huge amount of chemicals was also buried into the soil, and a vast number of trees were cut down to make those caskets.To put just the wood part of that into perspective, approximately four million acres of forests are torn down just to make caskets in the U.S. One football field spans one acre, so you can imagine the vastness.Not only are we harming our soil with dangerous chemicals and tearing down trees to make wooden caskets, but that combination also leads to bodies requiring a few decades to fully decompose.Talk about not being at one with nature!However, all hope is not lost. There are other, greener options available. Take the Vajrayana Buddhists. They neither cremate nor bury their dead. Instead, they place them at a safe distance in the open air for vultures to come and eat them. They believe vultures carry their dead up to the holy spirits. Moreover, it’s as nature intended as the deceased find their place within the food chain, giving back to the circle of life.Another nature-friendly way of keeping burials clean and sustainable is by becoming one with nature. There is a new concept called “green burials” that buries bodies in biodegradable coffins or wrapped in a shroud without a concrete burial vault. This way, the body decomposes rapidly and completely, so it returns to nature as intended. The coffins used in these green burials are generally made from natural wood, woven paper, or mushrooms. The latter is called “the living cocoon,” which helps a body decompose as quickly as two to three years.Yet an even speedier and more nature-friendly way to be buried is to be turned into a plant. Biodegradable urns that come in the shape of a tube of an egg can be buried beneath a tree seed or sapling. The decomposing container and person’s cremated remains blend with the soil to nourish the plant, keeping the entire process green and clean. Plus, the people who lost their loved ones have a beautiful, natural place to visit.What a way to go!

So much so that it may be the answer to immortality. Take the “2045 Initiative.” This developing project aims to create tech that will enable someone’s personality to be transferred from a human body into a non-biological carrier. And, as the project’s name suggests, this may happen as soon as 2045.Currently, our immortality options are less personality-based and more information-based. For instance, there are apps that use AI to turn photos into moving images so that people can see their deceased loved ones virtually smile or look at them.On top of that, AI has made it possible to text, talk, and have a video call with your loved ones after they have passed away. These websites or apps typically function as a chatbot – using the slightly more morbid term deadbot – that has collected data and information about the deceased from the internet. After all, our digital footprint is high these days.Just think about how much of our lives are posted on social media sites, company websites, articles, etc. So even though the bot doesn’t actually know how your loved one used to talk, act, or react, it can gather enough information online to mimic them in a convincing manner and to build a believable digital representation of them.The question now is how do we create immortality? How can we use AI technology to entirely erase the grief we experience when someone dies because they simply wouldn’t die? The answers lie in never having to give up our physical bodies. Enter projects like the 2045 Initiative. Mostly created by grieving people, the focus of these apps and websites is to help us cope with the pain of losing someone we love.Instead of using AI to collect information on the internet and create a bot version of our deceased loved ones after the fact, there could be ways of instantly synchronising our experiences and memories into a digital replica of our brain, and storing them in the cloud. Then, once we die, our consciousness would remain intact as an artificial cloud-stored brain. So even though our human body would die, we could simply insert our consciousness into an artificial body, and we would continue to live. It all sounds like a distant dream, but 2045 isn’t that far around the corner!

Let’s be honest, teleportation sounds very cool. However, in movies, it doesn’t seem like a straightforward process. Think about the movie “The Fly.”For teleportation to work, every single one of your atoms needs to be separated, and they need to be put back together in a new location. The process essentially works like a fax machine that scans and transmits your data to the receiver where you will be reproduced.A fax machine is an ideal example of a teleportation device. You have two identical documents in two separate places. Even though it looks like you have sent the original document, you’ve only sent a copy of it to another location. That translates as the same working principle of teleportation. Imagine your body being scanned and a copy of you being sent to a different place. That’s teleportation. That’s also why it’s such a complex process. How do we scan and send a copy of ourselves to an entirely separate location without any negative ramifications occurring? Even with dangerous potentialities, teleportation is still a major focus for scientists asit could save us incredible amounts of time. By teleporting, we’d travel faster than the speed of light.To put that into perspective, travelling at the speed of light allows you to circumnavigate the equator 7.5 times in just one second. Teleportation is faster than that! So how near or far into the future will teleportation become a part of our lives?Enter: the quantum world of physics. In 2017, a team of researchers in China reported it had successfully beamed a photon particle to a specially constructed spacecraft orbiting roughly 300 miles (482 km) from Earth. On top of beaming a particle from Earth into space, the team also created the first quantum network between satellite and ground, breaking the long-distance record for quantum entanglement. Put simply, quantum entanglement is the theory that makes teleportation possible. This theory explains that some particles in our universe exhibit uniform behaviour. For instance, if one pair of particles moves to the right, the other pair must move to the left. They are different, but they are always dependent on each other, so the state of one will always reveal the state of the other. This is what happens when physicists use this theory in teleportation. Whatever material is being teleported is encoded, this coded information then takes the form of the material on the other end – just like a fax machine.There are a ton of questions still left to be answered but that’s teleportation in a nutshell!

Is it possible to eat meat without actually harming the animal? Vegetarians and all animal lovers alike — listen up — as this just may change the world, or at least how and what you eat.Thanks to cultivated meat, the future just may be kinder to our furry, feathered, and scaled friends.Science is pretty awesome, and scientists have found a way to clone animal muscle tissue cells and grow them in vats. They can even print them into different meat shapes using bio-printers! And they’ve been experimenting not just with typical animals you’d see on a dinner plate but also with wild animals!But how does it work? A small tissue sample is taken from a healthy animal while they are comfortably living their lives.The company Primal Foods cultivates its meat in stainless-steel tanks. Meat is formed inside these cultivators just as it would inside an animal’s body. This process only takes a few weeks, and then it is ready to eat! Pretty amazing! Bioprinters are another way of making meat without harming animals. It creates cultivated meat, which is a form of cellular agriculture, using in-vitro cell cultures of animal stem cells.But is it possible to create ‘meat’ that has not been taken from living animal cells? The Dutch startup Mosa Meat claims it can. They say they have been able to make a lump of meat that does not use fetal bovine serum - truly making lab-grown meat cruelty-free. Companies around the world have started cultivating different types of meat for consumption - from chicken to fish and other seafood. This ethical and environmentally-friendly meat is taking the world by storm and is a rapidly growing market. According to the NGO Good Food Institute, in 2021, the industry brought in 140 million dollars. However, unless you’re living amongst the one percent, you probably haven’t tried or even seen any of these products. That’s because none of this is cheap. At the moment, one pound of cultivated meat costs $10,000! That’s not exactly sustainable for the average consumer. Keeping lab-grown meat safe from bacteria and viral infections is also expensive - as the meat in the lab does not have an immune system to protect itself. So, while this is all pretty exciting, and we can’t wait to see more progress being made, it looks like it will most likely still take some time before we have a lab-grown tiger steak or any other animal on our plates. What do you think?
