7 Real Inventions That Look like They're out of a Sci-Fi Movie

Sci-Fi films are fertile ground for dreaming about the future of tech. The genre has historically helped inspire inventors around the world to attempt to make some of them a reality. 

While some things might never be realized, like faster-than-light travel, there are some less ambitious tech inventions that are currently becoming a reality. 

What is the weirdest invention ever?

Whether or not something is weird is a somewhat subjective notion, but there are some really odd inventions that solve problems that no one really thought existed. Some notable examples include

What are some inventions that look like they're from the future?

1. Zoomable contact lenses are right out of Sci-Fi

Believe it or not, but some scientists at the University of California are currently working on contact lenses that can actually zoom in. The lenses are able to track your eye movements, and their zoom function is activated by blinking twice. Incredible, right?

The lenses are also able to respond to the electrooculographic signals of your eye. These amazing biomimetic lenses are able to detect and respond to these signals. 

Their zoom function works much like that of a regular camera lens. 

2. Health monitoring mirrors might be the future

A joint research project between MIT and Harvard is working on futuristic health-monitoring smart-mirrors. They plan to detect the symptoms of most common diseases using their futuristic mirror.

The mirror is supposed to be able to detect minute variations in brightness as your blood flows through the vessels in your skin. By analyzing this information, and querying its databanks, the mirror could help make an early diagnosis for some serious health issues. 

If achieved, this mirror could revolutionize health care around the world. It would also alleviate some of the pressure on health care providers in countries with nationalized health services, like the UK.

3. Exoskeletons are coming to a reality near you

A common feature of many Sci-Fi movies, exoskeletons are becoming a reality. From "Iron Man" to the "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Aliens," exoskeletons seem as though they should already exist in reality.

While fully enclosed power-armored suits might be a bit of a stretch right now, some of their basic components are already in development. Various military forces are already steaming ahead with their development to enhance their soldier's combat capabilities.

They are also being developed to restore mobility to the elderly and will probably find their way into many industries around the world. It will only be a matter of time before they become commercially available to the masses at a reasonable price. 

4. Your flying taxi is on its way

Another common feature of Sci-Fi movies revolves around flying vehicles, including taxis and other mass transport. As it turns out, various companies are already pressing ahead to make them a reality very soon.

In fact, at the CES 2019, a company called Bell Nexus showcased its visionary VTOL air taxi that could be a glimpse of the future. According to the company, their hybrid-electric propulsion and gas-turbine-engined flying taxi should be commercially available within the next five years.

Fantastic news. Now you will no longer have to suffer in long lines of traffic when you in a hurry.

5. This bio-refrigerator sounds amazing

A Russian designer called Yuriy Dmitriev is currently working on an amazing prototype refrigerator that could revolutionize the way we preserve perishables. His high-tech Bio-robot Refrigerator not only looks like it is from the future, but it also runs without electricity.

This zero-energy (supply) device uses a special odorless, non-sticky gel-like substance that can actually cool food items simply by placing them in it. It is also designed in such a way that it can be placed in any orientation and still work perfectly well. 

We can't remember any Sci-Fi film that has a similar concept, but it wouldn't look out of place. If achieved, this would be an incredible technological feat with many applications outside of the home.

6. Healing nanobots are coming to a syringe near you very soon

The concept of tiny robots that can heal (or kill) people is another common feature of  Sci-Fi films. From the Borg in "Star Trek" to "Red Dwarf" nanobots have been, until now, a believable, yet seemingly unobtainable dream for sci-fi fans.  

As it turns out, they are currently being developed by various groups around the world.

The idea is that these tiny robots will be injected into the human body to monitor someone's health from the inside. Some will also come equipped with tiny surgical instruments that could actually repair damaged organs in situ. 

If achieved, and some estimate it may be within the next decade, this might mean you never need to see a doctor ever again! 

7. Jetpacks are a' comin'

From the Mandalorian to the Rocketeer, jetpacks are another common tech seen in Sci-Fi. Many inventors have had a crack at this tech for many decades, but now we may be closer than ever to making it a reality.

A New Zealand-based company, Martin Jetpack, claims they have finally made a reliable unit that provides the users with longer than 30-minutes of flight time. If true, this could revolutionize personal transportation forever. 

But they are not the only company working on this. Jet Pack International (JPI) is also close to realizing this dream. 

It would also have, potentially, many other applications for the military and various industries around the world.
