If you are looking for some inspiration for Valentine's Day gifts this year, you might want to consider not buying anything related to those below. But, on the other hand, some of these might make great prank gifts too!

Just make sure your partner will see the funny side. It could backfire badly.

What should I not get for Valentine's Day?

When it comes to considering gifts for your sweetheart, the golden rule is to put a little thought into it. Gifts don't need to be expensive or fancy, but they should express how you understand their likes and dislikes and some effort on your part.

For example, they might prefer a hand-made card to an over-priced commercially available one you've picked up from a petrol station.

But there are some common Valentine's Day gifts that will really disappoint your partner. These include, but are not limited to (courtesy of redtri.com): -

  • Cheap flowers
  • Expired coupons
  • A talking bear
  • Roses for somebody else
  • A breakup email (obviously)
  • A flower with borrowed money
  • Confirmation of delivery, but no flowers
  • A toilet seat

What are some of the worst tech gifts to give for Valentine's Day?

So, without further ado, here are some of the worst tech-based Valentine's Day gifts you could buy. Sadly this list is not exhaustive.

It is also in no particular order.

1. An iron probably wouldn't go down that well

Depending on how well you know your partner, buying an iron might be one of the worst tech gifts for Valentine's Day you could think of getting your special someone. In the vast majority of cases, and if the gift is not meant as a joke, this will go down like a lead balloon.

If you consider a household chore tool as being a suitable gift for such a romantic occasion you should be prepared for the fallout.

Of course, if you and your partner love nothing more than winding each other up, an iron might also be the most perfect gift imaginable. For best results place the iron in a box of something else they really want.

If you do choose to buy an iron for your significant other, we salute your bravery.

2. They might not appreciate Bitcoin either

Giving the gift of money, or another financially-based item is rarely a good idea for Valentine's Day. The same goes for digital cryptocurrencies, according to a video by CNET.

In the vast majority of cases, giving money tends to show your significant other that you had no idea what to buy them. They would probably prefer that you make something yourself.

That being said, it could also be the perfect gift if they are "all-in" with crypto. If that is the case, it will show them that you really do listen to them and understand what is important to them.

3. Don't buy an Android-lover iPhone stuff (and vice versa)

Giving your significant other incompatible tech is also a big no, no. For example, if they are a dyed-in-the-wool Android user, they will neither appreciate nor be able to use an iPhone accessory (and vice versa).

This will not only be a complete waste of money, but it might also offend their sensibilities. But for those who know that iPhones are inferior to Android-alternatives (yes we went there), your Android phone gift could be a life-changing event.

While initially, they might not be very happy, in the long run, they will come to love you even more for saving their life. Every cloud has a silver lining.

4. A car tracker is probably not a good idea either

Another no, no tech gift for Valentine's Day is a car tracker. While this is an awesome tool for parents to put in their teenager's car, it might not go down too well with your sweetheart.

By giving such a gift you are, in essence, giving something that can track their every move. It might be taken the wrong way, to say the least.

They may feel that you don't entirely trust them. This could be fatal for your relationship.

But, on the other hand, if they have been pestering you for such a device, it might be a wise purchase.

5. Fitness devices tend to be taken the wrong way

According to a survey by CNET, the most inappropriate Valentine's Day tech gift is actually any form of fitness device. It doesn't really matter if it is a fitness tracker or a set of smart scales, you might be in the doghouse.

Funnily enough, this might be taken the wrong way. Nobody likes to be told, evenly suitably, that their physical appearance could do with some improvement.

While you might be giving the gift with the best of intentions, your partner might be offended.

Of course, if they are a fitness-maniac, it could, conversely, be a perfect gift for them. You know your partner so plan accordingly.

6. Dental hygiene products might also be a bad idea

You might be sensing a running theme by now? With things like fitness devices probably not being a good idea, any other gifts that involve personal hygiene are usually also a poor choice.

Nobody wants to be given a gift that might impact their self-esteem. While that fancy smart toothbrush might seem like a cool gift choice, you are subtly, if unintentionally, telling them their dental hygiene needs improvement.

Buyer beware!

But, once again, you know your partner and they may well love it!

7. 3D printed chocolate faces is a little odd

And finally, another "interesting" Valentine's Day tech-based gift is 3D printed chocolate faces. You may well be the most attractive person in the world, but giving your partner an edible version is probably a little bit strange.

While you might think it's an awesome idea, your partner may well be put off. But you could probably bank this idea for other less romantic occasions?

You might be better off 3D printing something more romantic like hearts or their name, for example.
