Foldable devices, and predominantly smartphones, although still in their infancy, are growing in numbers, and Apple has been no stranger to them.
Apple's patent for a foldable device has officially been granted, enabling the tech giant to push forward with its new idea. Featuring a unique hinge mechanism that moves each side, the hope is that the device's display will not crease.

Apple's idea for a foldable device
Published in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent outlines Apple's plans for its future foldable device.
As per the patent, the device's foldable hinge is able to provide proper separation between the two distinct sides of the display, enabling the flap to meet at one point when unfolded, and separate when folded inwards.

If the hinge works properly it could change the way foldable devices currently function. There have been a few moans and groans over current smartphones with a foldable display due to creasing.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X both suffer from this "condition." Motorola's Razr foldable smartphone tackles the issue differently by also using a unique hinge design, however, complaints of creaking sounds when it opens and closes have been reported.

Foldable devices aren't for everyone, and they keep the market more niche. However, if innovation and development in tech are evolving as fast as they do, perhaps these could work for a broader audience in the future. We'll have to wait and see what happens with Apple's new design in time.
It would indeed be exciting to see a novel Apple device in the near future.
