Mobile phone camera technology company, Oppo, has designed the world's first under screen front-facing camera.

The ‘selfie’ camera has become a staple of smartphones.

The major device makers have experimented with the placement of the camera, its size, and quality over the last few years but so far no one has been able to develop a way for it to be totally hidden under the display.

Oppo is confident they have cracked the code and are displaying a prototype of the under-screen camera at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2019 this week.

Work to be done before commercial release

Earlier this month, Oppo teased tech fans with a Weibo post that showed off the camera for the first time. Their appearance in Shanghai comes with a few more details about how the camera actually works.

The front facing camera uses a custom transparent material in combination with a redesigned pixel structure so that light can get through to the camera. Oppo says the camera's sensor is larger than what is typically in use in cameras now.

Camera without bezel or fisheye

The area of the phone housing the camera still works with touch control when the camera is not in operation.

Oppo also boasts that the camera doesn’t affect display quality but photos from Engadget Chinese seem as though the camera is visible under some light conditions.
