Company Lets You Wear Your Deceased Ones as Memorial Diamonds

Losing someone you loved is a terrible thing. But a Swiss company gives you a chance to wear on your deceased's remains as a memorial diamond.

The Algordanza company features an option called 'diamond burial.' This allows people to wear the ashes of the deceased in an earring, necklace or ring.

The Algordanza startup company uses cremated human remains and a bit of science to make memorial diamonds. Regular diamonds are pressurized carbon atoms that are squeezed and baked from earth’s mantle. The human body also around 20 percent carbon. This allows Algordanza to grow synthetic diamonds via by a unique process.

A less financially taxing way to remember loved ones

According to Rinaldo Willy, founder of Algordanza, a “diamond burial” could cost less if compared with the traditional options. There's also the matter of being able to keep the diamond with you, something other burial options simply don't allow.

Processing the diamond burial

“During cremation, the majority of carbon escapes as carbon dioxide. In the ashes remain 1-5% of carbon.
In our laboratory, we are able to isolate this carbon from all other substances. This isolated carbon is the foundation for the diamond growth following the example set by nature.

"The carbon solely from the remains of your loved one converts under high pressure and high temperature to graphite. The purified graphite is the foundation for the subsequent diamond transformation inside our own HPHT (High Pressure – High Temperature) machines.

"A diamond starter crystal within the growth cell triggers the growth of the Memorial Diamond. It is melted into a metal alloy and does not conjoin with the carbon isolated from the cremation ashes. More diamond crystals slowly crystallize on the surface of the starter crystal.

"The growth process takes weeks – depending on the desired size of the Memorial Diamond. The starter crystal is then removed from the surface of the rough diamond.”

Different sized and cut

Algordanza says that they require only a part of the ashes to create different sized and cut synthetic diamonds. They're also able to use all remains of the deceased as you wish.

"To chose a diamond burial does not mean to relinquish a traditional burial. On average the cremation of a adult person results in 2,5 - 3,5 kg cremated remains. For the creation of an ALGORDANZA Memorial Diamond we require at least 500 g of cremation ashes in order to ensure to create one or even more memorial diamonds."

According to company, sizes of memorial diamonds are not dependant on the amount of the remains.

"During the growing process inside our diamond synthesis machines, the carbon arranges atom by atom until it reaches its desired size. The duration of the growing process therefore depends on the size respectively the weight of the diamond. This growing process can last up to several days."
