Elon Musk Just Shared Exciting Videos and Pictures of the Boring Company's First Tunnel!
Yesterday, Elon Musk finally announced a name for his tunneling company's first machine. Godot, he said, would be the name of the Boring Company's first big piece of equipment. And just like Samuel Beckett's Godot, Musk & Co. are having to wait for its progress. Today, Musk shared some images on his Instagram that hint toward a much shorter wait time than anticipated.
The most impressive video shows the testing of the electric sled. This would give rapid one-way transport through the tunnels. Ideally, Musk said the tunnels would get someone from Westwood to LAX in just five minutes. Right now that drive takes about 22 minutes (or if you're in a hurry, an hour once you hit LA's horrible traffic).
Another post brought up Gary the Snail, the company pet who lives in a pineapple. (Yes, seriously, Spongebob fans. He exists.) Gary the snail became a talking point for Musk during this year's TED Talk.
"We’ve got a pet snail called Gary, this from Gary the snail from South Park, no sorry, Spongebob Squarepants," he noted. "So Gary is capable of currently going fourteen times faster than tunnel boring machine. We want to beat Gary. He’s not a patient little fellow and that will be victory. Victory is beating the snail."
Gary should start training to take on the boring machine now. Another Instagram post shows the segments are already in the final assembly stages.
The evolution of this project -- from frustrated Tweets into a full-blown company -- proves that with a clever idea and a good set of investors, any project can be possible.
