Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it's developed its first-ever desktop PC.

"We totally believe that Surface changes the way you produce, the way you create, the way you learn," said Panos Panay, a leader with Microsoft devices. "The product I'm going to show you is all of that — but it's one step further. It's going to seem familiar, but it's going to feel different."

It boasts a spectacularly thin LCD with its sleek design. In fact, Microsoft claims it's the "world's thinnest LCD monitor ever built." The touchscreen is enclosed in forged aluminum that measures 28 inches across.

Based on advertising, it's clear the PC is targeted toward artists, photographers, designers, and illustrators. However, it's perfect for any creative profession that would love to have innovative technology at its fingertips. The 3:2 ratio has 192 pixels per inch. An Intel 6th generation processor powers the computer. The arms holding the screen fold down to a 20-degree orientation.

"These chrome arms were meant to completely fade into the background," said Panay in the debut.

The guts of the computer, including a processor, graphics, fans, and inputs, can be found inside the base underneath the arms. The Surface Studio marks a foray for the company into hardware rather than strictly software development.

The computer also comes with accessories such as the radial Surface Dial. Simply place the dial on the screen to access menus and adjust things like color, volume or screen resolution. The Dial works with Microsoft's other Surface products - the Surface Pro and Surface Book - but not on its screens.

A built-in palm rejection also makes sure that users don't have false inputs and can interact with the screen exactly how they want. The built-in microphone lets users talk with Cortana, Microsoft's version of Siri, using simple voice commands.

Specs for the Surface Studio:

  • 28 inch 4500 x 3000 PixelSense LCD display
  • 6th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7
  • 1 TB or 2 TB hybrid drive
  • Stereo 2.1 Dolby audio
  • 5 MP front camera with Windows Hello support; 1080p video rear camera

The desktop starts at $3,000 and is available for preorder now. Depending on hardware specifications, the Surface Studio can cost as much as $4,200.
