The Mate 30 has been recreated as a camera first, smartphone second. But more impressively the phone breaks away from Google's services to forge its own path.

The full potential of the smartphone

“The Huawei Mate 30 Series unleashes the full potential of the smartphone. Designed to stand out, it challenges convention while delivering an unrivalled user experience. The era of 5G is an opportunity to rethink smartphone technology and the Huawei Mate 30 series is the ultimate expression of what’s possible," said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

The Mate 30 Pro has a 6.53-inch 2,400 x 1,176 flexible OLED screen that curves around both edges of the device while the regular Mate 30 has a 6.62-inch 2,340 x 1,080 rigid OLED. Meanwhile, the Pro comes with a 4,500mAh battery that can last for 9.2 hours while the regular model comes with a 4,200mAh battery that can last for 8.2 hours.

Huawei claims the phones come with new features that "deliver an amazingly smooth and engaging user experience." These include: an EMUI10 operating system featuring a contemporary magazine inspired layout, Intuitive Side-touch Interaction that allows for invisible virtual keys to handle volume adjustment, and 3D Face Unlock and In-screen Fingerprint to provide superior data security and privacy protection (Mate 30 Pro only).

The Mate 30 Pro comes with a notch which features a quartet of sensors, starting with the 32-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. Meanwhile, the Mate 30 has a smaller notch with just a 24-megapixel selfie lens.

Four colors

The new series comes in four colors: Emerald Green, Black, Space Silver and Cosmic Purple in matte metal gradient finish. This finish is engineered to avoid catching fingerprints or having the phone slide through your hands. Finally, there is a vegan leather edition in a green and orange-tinted leatherette.

There is no news on when the Mate 30 will be available however the costs have been revealed. The Mate 30 will go for about $880 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and the Mate 30 Pro will cost around $1210 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
