Huge underground bike park opening in Kentucky USA

Interesting Engineering

If you are a fan of riding around dirt tracks and hills on a dirt bike then you will wish that you lived in Kentucky in the USA (if you already don’t of course). This is because 100 feet (or 10 storeys) below the ground in Kentucky in what used to be a limestone mine, the first underground bike park is being dug out and it is pretty damn huge.

The underground bike park spreads out over 320,000 square feet (29,729 square meters) and this means it is going to be three times the size of any of the existing indoor bike parks. Called the Mega-Underground Bike Park it has miles and miles of trails that are interconnected along with single intricate tracks, dirt jumps, pump tracks, technical lines and much more.

When all of the tracks and trails have been completed it is going to play home to more than 45 trails, Jump Lines, Pump Tracks, Dual Slalom, BMX, Cross Country and Single Track. Some of the regions in the dirt park have been made for younger riders, while others have been designed for advanced riders. The trails are going to be made from different layers of dirt as this allows them to be flexible and it doesn’t come with high costs if a trail has to be re-done.

Along with rough and dusty dirt the owners will use a red sticky clay that hardens the top surface of the dirt, a special clay from USA BMX specifically made for trail riding. The Mega-Underground Bike Park is set to open 9 February this year and as it is underground it will be open all year round offering a temperature of around 60 degrees.
