NVIDIA Partners With Mercedes to Develop Next-Gen Car Computer

NVIDIA and Mercedes Benz announced a partnership to develop a "revolutionary in-vehicle computering system" for the next generation of luxury cars in 2024, according to a NVIDIA press release.
What's more, their driving autonomy systems might best Tesla's.

The partnership was touted as "the most sophisticated and advanced computing architecture ever deployed in an automobile," according to the NVIDIA press release. It also said the new software system will enable Level 2 and 3 driving autonomy — a rival and more than a match for Tesla's renowned autopilot, respectively. The release also said the system would offer Level 4 parking autonomy.
This means a vehicle outfitted with the forthcoming autopilot will be able to move into parking stalls without extra help from the human driver. While there will still be a need for human hands to handle emergency situations, nominal driving conditions could go just fine without human input, reports Engadget.
Ambitions to best Tesla
Moreover the computing system — based on NVIDIA's DRIVE platform — will capably "automate driving of regular routes from address to address," according to NVIDIA's press release. Interestingly, the system will update wirelessly, letting customers buy and remotely install future safety and convenience features, subscription services, and software applications until they cease to own the vehicle. In essence, it's not unlike Tesla's approach to its Enhanced Autopilot upgrades.
"We are excited to work with Mercedes-Benz," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "Together, we're going to revolutionize the car ownership experience, making the vehicle software programmable and continuously upgradeable via over-the-air updates. Every future MercedesBenz with the NVIDIA DRIVE system will come with a team of expert AI and software engineers continuously developing, refining and enhancing the car over its lifetime."
As Tesla, Ford, and many other automakers move forward into the next generation of autonomous driving in cars, Mercedes Benz and NVIDIA aim to surge ahead of the competition in the coming years.
