The New York Police Department (NYPD) has a shiny new toy in the form of a robot dog with an extendable arm. You guessed right, it's one of Boston Dynamics' Spot the robot dogs, including the robotics' company's extendable arm add-on

Known as "Digidog," the NYPD's robot pup is in its testing phases, so isn't officially out on the streets making arrests — yet.

Local news reporters, ABC 7 NY, were the first to report on the news on Thursday last week thanks to an exclusive interview with the NYPD.

The NYPD will use Digidog for emergency situation responses, as ABC 7 NY reported

"This dog is going to save lives, protect people, and protect officers and that's our goal," NYPD Technical Assistance Response Unit Inspector Frank Digiacomo said.

Digidog will be kitted out with its extra robotic arm, which will be available in January 2021, and will come in handy for opening doors and moving objects out of the way.

Just check out this video on YouTube of the Massachusetts State Police's own robot dog with an extendable arm from 2019. Again, the MA Police's robot dog was also in its experimental stages, and not yet roaming the streets with a police badge. The NYPD's Digidog is set to be similar.

Remote controlled Digidog is Boston Dynamics' infamous Spot the robot dog. It can move at 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h), can climb stairs, has a 360-degree video viewing capability, and is able to lift up to 30 pounds (13.5 kg), per ABC 7 NY's report.

The NYPD had previously mentioned using robots to help during two emergency situations. Back in October, the robot was used during a hostage situation in Queens, a New York City borough. During that same month, Digidog came in handy when a shooting suspect barricaded himself in his Brooklyn home, as ABC 7 NY reported.

So far, this is the NYPD's first and only robot dog, and so far during its testing phase it's only been used a few times.
