Raspberry Pi 4 Launches Its First 8GB RAM Version

Raspberry Pi has released a new version of the Raspberry Pi 4, its flagship model, and it is nothing short of impressive. Indeed, now, models that come with 2GB and 4GB of RAM, can also count on a new model with 8GB.

But it doesn't come cheap. This latest model will cost you $75, making it the most expensive Raspberry Pi out there.

Nothing has changed in terms of what you get: there's a still single-board computer equipped with an ARM-based CPU, plenty of ports, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. This means all the different versions of the Raspberry Pi 4 have the same specifications, it's just the RAM capacity that is changing.

So we now have the Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB of RAM for $35, the Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM for $55, and the Raspberry Pi 4 with 8GB of RAM for $75. 

Raspberry Pi claims an 8GB variant was in the work for quite a while now. The device encountered complications as the expected LPDDR4 RAM package with 8GB had to be specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi.

But these delays have not slowed down Pasperbby Pi. On the software front, the firm is already working on a 64-bit version of Raspbian, an operating system that will run on a Raspberry Pi.

For the time being, Raspbian still uses a 32-bit kernel. This means that to move over to the 64-bit required to use the 8GB of RAM users must install Ubuntu or Gentoo on a Raspberry Pi. Quite a complication for now.

Last but not least, Raspberry and Debian have made a portmanteau of their name called Raspbian. Neat! Other than the name, no other changes have been made.
