TRON-like Wearable Tech Halo Belt Keeps You Safe at Night

Interesting Engineering

1.24 million people are killed in road accidents annually. That’s a pretty scary amount, considering how many of us enjoy taking nighttime bike rides, runs, or even walks down the street to our favorite deli. Founder and cyclist Vincent Pilot Ng found a deep dissatisfaction in the nighttime safety market, as bike lights and reflective wear just wasn’t optimal enough for full safety.

So he decided to take matter into his own hands and created what is possibly the coolest safety product on the market: a light-up LED belt that’s designed for 360 degree visibility. Their initial inception in 2012 found the Bright Belt Company incredible success on the popular crowdfunding site, Kickstarter. And again with Halo Belt x Rickshaw messenger bags. And again with Halo Mini for pets… with each campaign popular and overfunded.

However, even bigger and, dare we say it?, brighter, things are currently happening for San Francisco-based Halo Belt’s future. Their latest campaign via Kickstarter, the Halo 2.0, has their amazing belts revamped and more luminous than ever. Utilizing the feedback they received from their funders from their previous three campaigns, the Halo 2.0 uses their custom LED design and high quality fiber optics in conjunction with 3M reflective elastic in a formidable combination that will allow maximum visibility. Additionally, the 2.0 has a rechargable micro USB lithium battery with just two hours for a full recharge.

"We wanted to design and create a product that made safety appealing to today's generation. Not only does safety need to have functionality, it needs to be able to connect with society's culture, lifestyle, and personality,” says founder Vincent Pilot Ng. Indeed, the versatility of the Halo Belt is appealing: from cyclists, roadside assistance, military and law enforcement, to even recreational use for fans of bright lights.
