Amabrush bills itself as the world’s first automatic toothbrush. It basically looks like a bristly mouth guard attached to a ping pong ball. You put the ‘mouthguard’ in your mouth and the gadget cleans your teeth in a ‘dentist recommended manner’. The whole thing only takes ten seconds and even puts the toothpaste on for you! The company is pitching the idea on Kickstarter now and they have more than €400,000 committed already with 27 days to go.

Not better than regular but more consistent

Surprisingly the company doesn't claim their product is better than cleaning your teeth with a regular toothbrush. But they do say it is better than how most people clean their teeth. Apparently, every other person is skipping their nightly teeth cleaning routine because they are too tired. While the rest of us aren’t cleaning for long enough or with enough attention to detail.

The automatic toothbrush is made from silicon, up close it looks a little like a rare sea creature, with fine bristles, angled at 45 degrees. Some of these have “built-in micro-channels” that deliver the toothpaste to your teeth. When you initiate to clean, the brushes move against your teeth for 10 seconds. The company fact sheet informs us that, “If you brush your teeth for the recommended 120 seconds with a regular toothbrush (manual or electric), every surface gets brushed for just 1.25 seconds (given the fact that you have 32 teeth and every teeth has three surfaces). Amabrush brushes all your surfaces for whole 10 seconds. This means: every tooth surface gets brushed 8x longer and the total toothbrushing duration is 12x quicker.”

What would you do with 100 extra days?

If you are inspired to get those 100 days of your life back from the chore of teeth cleaning, you can pick up the basic Amabrush kit on Kickstarter for €78. The kit comes with a single mouthpiece, handpiece and toothpaste capsule. The mouthpiece attaches to the handpiece via a super strong magnet, so there isn’t any fiddling around with connecting devices. Once you finish brushing, you rinse the mouthpiece and sit it back on its little custom designed tray. The tray also acts as the charging pad for the handpiece that uses contact charging.

Better than a dentist bill

You’d have to be pretty strict about remembering to put the mouthpiece back on the tray so the next user doesn’t have to wrestle with your dripping bristles. But the whole package does look pretty neat. Like regular toothbrushes, the mouthpiece needs to be replaced every 3-6 months. At a cost of €6, it isn’t outrageous and a dentist bill is definitely going to be more. We are not sure if this is the future of teeth cleaning or just another Kickstarter gimmick, but we are definitely keen to put it to the test.
