Lamborghini Huracán STO Debuts, Aims to Set Track Records Spring 2021

The Lamborghini Huracán STO super sports car is a feast for the eyes, with maximum everything.

High-end sports sports car manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini has unleashed the Huracán STO — short for Super Trofeo Omologata, a super sports car taking inspiration from the racing heritage of Lamborghini Squadra Corse's one-make race series, according to the automaker's official website.

The new super sports car will go on sale in the Spring of 2021, with initial pricing at $328,000.

Lamborghini Huracán debuts with maximum everything

Two of the company's previous race cars inspired it to build this new supercar, which is road-legal and high-power: the GT3 EVO and the Super Trofeo EVO. Predictably, the new Huracán is still powered with a 5.2 V10, but the Sant'Agata automakers ramped up the STO's horsepower, to 640.

The Huracán's torque is 417 lb-ft, which is less than the 443 lb-ft of the Performante. But acceleration has jumped — Lamborghini says the Huracán has a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) of only 3 seconds, flat, and a top speed of 192.6 mph (roughly 310 km/h) — outstanding numbers to be sure, but not the main feature.

Designed to set lap records, smothered in carbon fiber

This new Lamborghini was explicitly designed to break lap records, which means major advances in weight and aerodynamics. The STO is 95 lbs (43 kg) lighter than the Performante — an already-lightweight wonder. This drop might come from the STO's pivot to rear-wheel, instead of all-wheel drive.

However, there's also an uptick in carbon fiber for the exterior panels — as 75% of them are carbon fiber now. The Huracán's windshield is 20% lighter than the Performanente's, and the wheels are made of magnesium, instead of the conventional aluminum alloy.

The interior is a feast for the eyes — with full-carbon door panels, carbon fiber sport seats, and no carpeting (the floor is also carbon fiber now). Various surfaces throughout the interior are coated with the Carbonskin. Altogether this new Lamborghini Huracán racks in at a dry weight of 2,952 lbs (roughly 1,400 kg).

The new Lamborghini has additional air ducts in the front hood to enhance airflow to the radiator and generate more downforce. Additionally, the front end more efficiently directs air around the front wheels to minimize drag, while front brake ducts have advanced cooling for the "CCM-R" brakes — a new design taking a cue from racing brakes for more thermal durability than standard carbon ceramics, Autoblog reports.

The new front end has a name — "cofango" — a sophisticated portmanteau of the Italian words for "hood" and "fender."

Rear fender, 'overall airflow efficiency' increase of 30%

The rear fender design lowers the car's drag, but a novel NACA air intake (integrated into the fender) also works as the engine's intake. Lamborghini said the shortened duct gives the vehicle "a 30% decrease in status pressure losses." Additionally, an improved rear engine cover comes with a second integrated air scoop that helps with cooling.

The Huracán even comes with a shark fin on the rear cover — which straightens and redirects the airflow to the wing, adding even more downforce in the corners.

While Lamborghini neglected to say what the total downforce is, it did say downforce for the Huracán is 53% greater than the Performante — with an "overall airflow efficiency" increase of 37%.

Lamborghini Huracán STO sells Spring 2021, $328,000

Under the obvious, Lamborghini has increased the wheel track, and fitted more rigid suspension bushings, with model-specific anti-roll bars, along with impressive MagenRide 2.0 dampers.

This gives drivers rear-wheel steering, a new fixed steering ratio, and more rapid gear shifting from the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The automaker added a new "STO" drive mode for high-performance road driving, but the Trofeo mode is ideal for record-setting track performance. The Lamborghini Huracán STO is like an Xmas list of maximalist super sportscar features that feel too good to be true, if it weren't for the pricey receipt owners will keep. The STO goes for sale in Spring 2021, for a starting price of $328,000.
