15 Futuristic Cars We Cannot Wait to See on the Road

If you grew up playing science fiction video games or watching science fiction movies, at some point, you probably coveted the futuristic technology that you saw on your screen. And, honestly, who wouldn't? Maybe you dreamed of owning a flying car that could take you back to the future; or dreamed of racing a spaceship in a galaxy far, far away.

Well, you are in luck. Today, there exist some technologies that parallel some of the things you might have seen on screen. We can now 3D print organs, clone animals, edit genes, travel in flying cars, pilot drones, and travel in autonomous transportation. So, at the very least, we are off to a pretty good start. Now, let's focus on the idea of futuristic cars. 

We are going to explore some of the most futuristic cars on the market. We will look at two important factors: the overall design of the vehicle and some of the features the vehicle comes equipped with. It should be mentioned that a lot of the vehicles on this list only exist as concept cars, or in very limited editions, and for a very high sticker price. So for now, this is more of a wish list than a shopping list. 

1. Lotus Evija

This car is a force of nature, just pure unchecked power if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one, let alone afford one. It has been a while since the British brand, Lotus dropped a new vehicle, 11 years exactly. However, if you are a Lotus fan, this may be the car that you have been waiting for all these years. The new Evija, pronounced “e-VY-a”, is an all-electric hypercar that can push out an impressive 2000 horsepower without blinking an eye. However, let’s break that down even further. 

Each of the wheels on the vehicle has four motor-generators, producing 493 horsepower each, so roughly 2000 horsepower. And with all this power at your fingertips, expect the Evija to take you from 0 to 100 kph in under three seconds, with a top speed of 216 mph (349 kph). The vehicle also will have one of the fastest charging battery packs in the world, promising to charge its depleted battery to 80% in 18 minutes. Expect to get up to 249 miles (402 kilometers) off of one charge. 

The design itself is eye-catching, though not completely revolutionary, and somewhat resembles previous Lotus cars. Simply for what this car represents, a highly-powered EV, this car makes the list.

At one point, EVs were a lower-powered alternative to their combustion cousins, but now almost every major manufacturer is working on an electric flagship that can compete with the fastest gasoline-powered vehicles. We are looking forward to catching the Lotus Evija on the road in the next year or two. But not too many of us - only 130 will be made, and they will cost around $2 million each.

2. Byton K-Byte

What will draw buyers to autonomous vehicles in the future? Car enthusiasts love driving vehicles. The cars of the future and even some currently in production, have stunning, feature-packed interiors. If you are not taken aback by Byton’s design philosophy, then you will be blown away by its interior. The Byton K-Byte could be the premium sedan of the future. 

Expected to be in production in 2021, the car will feature level 4 autonomous driving, meaning it can drive without human oversight. It will feature massive and stunning touch screens in its interior that will be used for everything from entertainment to controlling the car.

Even more interesting, Byton's side "LiGuard" sensors are retractable when it's not in autonomous mode. In theory, you will be even able to control the car using Amazon Alexa. 

3. Honda Augmented Driving Concept

What is more futuristic than adding augmented reality to your driving experience? The autonomous vehicle promises to shuttle passengers around safely in the new smart city, reacting to its surrounding environment but never ignoring your needs. With simple hand gestures, you could tell this concept vehicle to pull-over for food, find the best place to take a picture, or stop by the nearest bathroom. 

4. Porsche Taycan

People were excited to hear about Porsche’s upcoming electric car. Say what you want about the brand, Porsche is synonymous with both unparalleled luxury and powerful engineering.

On its arrival, the Porsche Taycan turned heads. As expected, the vehicle is equipped with a beautiful interior.

Two synchronous motors will produce an excess of 600 hp, helping the Taycan to reach 100 kph in around 3.5 seconds. The vehicle will take you up to 298 miles (480 kilometers) off of one charge. Even more, the vehicle hosts an 800-volt system that will enable the car to charge up enough for 60 miles of range in four minutes via public fast-charging stations.

5. Polestar 2

Now, Polestar 2 is something that you can write home about. What is even cooler is that you can pick up this electric beast this year if you would like.

The Polestar 2020 is a fully-electric, four-door hatchback that hosts an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain that can churn out 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. Off of just one charge, expect to get up to 329 miles (530 kilometers) of range. The interior is all vegan, and instead of a key, it uses your phone.

6. Audi Aicon

Another autonomous concept vehicle, the Audi Aicon looks like something straight out of iRobot. The sleekly designed vehicle hopes to make its production debut in 2021. The electric vehicle boasts four motors has a comfortable range of up to 497 miles (800 kilometers) off one charge.

Audi even promises the vehicle will be able to charge its empty battery to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes ... wirelessly. Expect to get that Audi premium feeling when stepping into this car.

7. Piëch Mark Zero

This vehicle looks like what James Bond may drive in the future. The Piëch Mark Zero is both timeless and futuristic at the same time. The Mark Zero is another impressive electric vehicle that takes inspiration from classics like the Ferrari 250 GTO, Jaguar E-Type, and Shelby Cobra.

It also boasts some impressive features, including the ability to charge 80% of its battery in under 5 mins, up to 310 miles (500km) of range, and an impressive 0-100km time of 3.2 seconds.

8. Lightyear One

What is more futuristic than driving a solar-powered vehicle? The Lightyear One boasts an impressive 450 miles (725 km) of range per charge from its roof-based solar panels. In theory, the car could go for months without needing to be plugged in.

The Lightyear team promises that the cars' five square meters of solar cells are 20 percent more efficient than traditional models, and they’re encased in safety glass to protect them from damage. 9. Tesla Cybertruck

This concept vehicle was inspired by the Blade Runner movie. Whether you like the design or not, the Cybertruck is the most dramatic-looking out of all the vehicles on this list and that was likely the point. The new Tesla concept vehicle boasts some impressive features. 

The exoskeleton-styled vehicle is said to be nearly impenetrable and also features Tesla armor glass. The Cybertruck has a whopping 3,500 pounds of payload capacity and adjustable air suspension. While the interior keeps up the Tesla tradition of being extremely minimal. 

Of course, the vehicle is 100% electric, boasting an impressive 0-100kph acceleration of 2.9 seconds and up to 500 miles (804 kilometers) of range. The Tesla vehicle is nowhere near conventional but is extremely functional and that's what we love about it. You can even pre-order one of these trucks right now if you want, although it is most likely destined for military use.

10. Mercedes-Benz Vision Avtr

Ok, you cannot buy this car and probably will not be able to anytime soon, but we had to mention it because the vehicle is bonkers in the best possible way. Dubbed the Vision Avtr, this Mercedes Benz concept car was inspired by the 2009 blockbuster film Avatar. The car is packed with super-futuristic features.

Rather than a combustion engine, the Vision Avtr uses a battery whose graphene-based organic cell chemistry is completely free of rare-Earth elements. 

In fact, the battery in this car can even be composted. The seats of the Vision Avtr are made of wood, while the floor of the vehicle is made of hand-harvested Indonesian timber. Even more impressive, each wheel can be driven separately, and the front and rear axles can be driven either simultaneously or in opposite direction, meaning that the VISION AVTR can be driven sideways by approximately 30 degrees. Hopefully, the future is not too far away.

11. 2021 Rivian R1T

Rivian has been making waves recently and for a lot of good reasons. The R1T is a pickup truck that you will be seeing on the road in the coming years.

Built like any mid-size truck, the all-electric Rivian R1T boasts 750 horsepower from four electric motors and up to 400 miles (643 kilometers) of driving range. It also and has a massive 11,000 pounds (4989 kilograms) of towing capacity and has a 1764-pound (800 kilograms) payload capacity and a wading depth of 3 feet (0.9 meters).

12. Tesla Roadster

It would make sense that Tesla would make the list at least twice. The Tesla Roadster is not just a car, it is a spaceship. This car embodies everything great about the future of electric vehicles and in true Elon Musk fashion, this vehicle has been pushed to the absolute limits.

The Tesla Roadster aims to become the quickest car in the world, with record-setting acceleration, range, and performance.

Accelerating from 0-100 kph, the Tesla Roadster will get you there in a neck-breaking 1.9 seconds. Even more so, the vehicle has an impressive range of 619 miles (997 kilometers).

13. Hongqi S9

Chinese luxury carmaker Hongqui is currently trying to make a dent in the automotive world. Hongqi S9 is a great example of this. The company claims that its concept hybrid has a carbon fiber body and will deliver a maximum power of 1,400 horsepower, allowing the hypercar to sprint from 0 to 100 km per hour in 1.9 seconds, and hit a top speed of 249 mph (400 km/h). But this is more than a concept, Hongqi plans to put the S9 hypercar into production. This car could be yours - for a rumored $2.2 million.

14. GFG Style Kangaroo

This is one of the more unique cars/concepts on our list and it has got us excited for a variety of reasons. In short, the Kangaroo is a futuristic jacked-up EV with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering.

This beautiful vehicle even has three suspension modes: racing, road, and off-road - when you are looking for a little adventure. In short, the vehicle's 90-kWh battery pack is expected to churn out up to (279 miles) 450 kilometers of range off of one charge and has 483 horsepower. You might even see this kangaroo jumping around the roads in a year or two.

15. Audi AI:ME

Equipped with level-four autonomy, Audi designed a host of features into this EV concept vehicle that aims to make the journey to your destination relaxing and stress-free.

The interior of the car is built to resemble a living room, rather in a car, with couch and armchair-like seating and seats that convert to tables, complete with magnetic coffee cups. The touch panel almost completely surrounds the interior and features displays, which include an eye-tracking technology.

These displays are invisible until a touch or voice command is given. The touch panel not only allows the passenger to adjust the seats, temperature, lighting, and sound system but will provide curated restaurant suggestions and wellness tips.

16. Czinger 21 C

This not your everyday hypercar. Designed and manufactured in Los Angeles, California, The Czinger 21C is the world's first 3D printed hypercar. The car has people excited as Czinger's flagship could demonstrate how 3D printing could be a viable option for powerful vehicles.

The engine featured on the 21C is 98 ounces (2.9-liter) twin-turbo V8 producing 937 bhp with an 11,000 rpm red-line. The car allegedly will have a 0-62 mph time of 1.9 seconds. The production of the car will be limited to 80 units, so good luck getting your hands on one.
